If you pass all three checks I'm willing to bet with at least 80% certainty that you're legal.

This is what the category 3 assault weapons definition says:

        1. A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
          1. A folding or telescoping stock.
          2. A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
        2. A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
        3. Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

It must be semi-automatic to fall under this category. It must be an AR or AK listed by name to fall under category II. It must be a weapon listed on the Roberti-Roos list by name to fit under category I. It is none of these. It must meet federal requirements and if you bought it in a California store and haven't hacked the barrel off, it meets federal requirements.

Makes a great apartment gun. Good in tight places, Non-penetrating rounds, max stopping power. One bird shot, followed by #6 shot, and then the coup de grace, last shot is a 1 oz slug, just in case a grizzly breaks in.

              It's legal just gay.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

Oh, you are so right big strong macho man. Macho and whitty, you're too much. Thanks for the repartee. Just what I was looking for. I take it to truck stops every so often for relief. BTW, how are those beer drinking, NASCAR watching, chick banging, mensa meetings going?

I go shooting trap/skeet every Saturday/Sunday. Haven't done any IPSC or anything like that, but am taking a combat shotgun course at Frontsight sometime this year.

That being said, #6 shot is birdshot. Second, shotguns are meant to be pointed rather than aimed. Third, in order to get comfortable with a particular shotgun you have to put a lot of shots through it, so you can get the mount right.

Without a rifle stock (which is what I think you're saying), it's hard to point a shotgun. And at apartment ranges, the shot spread won't be wide enough to make an appreciable difference. And you wont' get a constant mount/sight picture. Shooting from the hip is not accurate at all.

As for putting a lot of rounds through it, even I get sore when I go for 4-6 rounds of trap a day, with my old school heavy pump action winchester shotgun. If you're putting that many shots through something with two pistol grips, you either have torn wrist ligaments or forearms the size of the incredible hulk.

You can have a pistol grip and vertical pistol grip on a semi auto as long as there is no collapsing or folding stock.

I'm talking man size targets at than ten to 25 feet. If you can't hit that from a "hip" shot (more like hip/chest level shot) with a shotgun, I don't know what to say. I've shot bird shot at that range and you should be fine. I have no idea how well that slug would go over with the pistol grips. Hopefuly I never have to find out. For any real amount of shooting, I put back on the factory pump and stock.

Well, it seems like you've already made up your mind. My main point is that shot doesn't spread all that much over 10 feet. According to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotgun#Pattern_and_choke - at 3 yards you have maybe 5 inches of spread to work with, with most of the shot being concentrated towards the middle of the place you're aiming. If you're in a real home defense situation with birdshot, if you just clip the guy with a few pellets he'll be angry more than anything.

And I agree that under perfect circumstances, you'll be fine with shooting from the hip, if you're awake and aware of the subject coming. If the only thing you hear is some glass breaking and you snatching your shotgun up half-awake, odds are you're going to have a bit more difficulty, which is where practice comes in.

I've actually converted my home defense benelli into a decent trap gun. The reason is that when I mount the shotgun these days, it's mainly muscle memory rather than conscious thought. And with just a pistol grip, it'll be very difficult to get the number of rounds through the shotgun without fatiguing you severely in order for you to reach that level of comfort with where the shotgun is pointing.
