Change fit OR point of aim.

I have come across something regarding one of my shotguns that I use. I have noticed over several months that one of my shotguns clearly shoots very flat! Another model I use shoots high. My question is between those two guns, should I change the sight picture to compensate for point of aim OR should I get used to the point of aim for THAT shotgun.

There's no question there is a difference based on shooting at clays AND patterning them.

    Sight picture? Point of aim?

Are you talking about a pistol? With a shotgun we talk about "fit" and look at the target. No idea what my sight picture looks like.

The fit for both shotguns are fine. But when I patterned them, one appears to be 70/30 and the other seems to be 40/60. That is quite a difference between those two shotguns. The one that shoots 40/60 fits me well but I have to point high on close targets in order to hit them. I discovered this a couple of times including yesterday at Moore N Moore. Cory set up one station where the clay was no more than 15 yards away and I missed all of them. I was pointing pretty much right at them.

I went back today to figure out why I missed them and sure enough I had to point above the clays to hit them. I hit every one when I pointed ABOVE.

That's not how "fit" works. "Fit" means you look at a target at 40 yards out, and break it without consciously aiming above it.

If both guns "fit" you properly, they would pattern the same.

A gun that shoots 40/60 doesn't fit you at all.

Get used to point of aim for that gun!! Don't change anything else, you can have 5 shotguns ( maybe more for you ) LOL But they are not all gonna shoot the same! as long as you know where this one is shooting your good to go.

That's the question. If point of aim is the solution, then I simply have to remember that this particular gun shoots low at close targets. I could raise the comb, but then it would be a sight picture like shooting a trap gun. I just didn't know which was the easier or BETTER solution.

The gun fits me very well. Shooting at 40 yards plus isn't an issue. I hit 88 out of 100 at Triple b's an 87 at Moore N Moore with this gun. But I noticed it shoots LOW at less than 15 yards. When I mentioned 40/60 it appears that way, but I didn't document how many pellets were below and above. LOL.

IMHO it depends on target presentation. A gun that "shoots high" is designed to keep a rising target in view. You're actually "aiming" under the bird and the gun compensates for that.

Does this gun have 2 beads? If so, how are they aligned when shouldered? Lined up, snowman (stacked), etc.

Is this an O/U? If so, how are the two barrels regulated to each other? They should converge at "X" distance.

Field guns are generally 50/50. You need to cover the bird on rising targets. If you want it to shoot higher, fit it so you see more rib.

It does sound more like a fit issue. Have you tried different chokes? Different brands, type, etc., can cause your gun to pattern differently.

Which if I do this with this gun at a distance of 15 yards or less I'm shooting under the target. I have to cover the target. It's obvious it's a flat shooting gun. The gun has two beads, but I barely see them which is my sight picture for all the guns I shoot. My sight picture almost eliminates beads.

This particular gun has fixed barrels. IC/MOD.

Bead? Haven't looked or seen a bead while shooting my shotguns! Have seen the end of the barrel though. lol

LOL. It's basically that way. There's just a faint part of it showing.

I didn't say anything about shooting using the bead, but rather determining fit.

Can do the same with the amount of rib, but it's less discreet.
