Shotgun still needs aiming. It's not as forgiving as a nuke. Try skeet and you c real fast the pattern ain't what you think it is.

590's are good shotguns. Just buy lots of ammo and spend time learning the function of the weapon. Assume that if you have to break it out as a home defense weapon, it will be in low light and you may be abruptly awakened and groggy. Muscle memory and practice will help a lot in that type of situation.

Today I put the deposit for a 590. Its on sale at Turners and decided its not worth spending another 300 for the 590A1. This would be my first shotgun. Any thoughts or recommendations? I am considering a tube extension for up to 9-12 shots!

I believe you should face the bad guy ready to shoot...he knows where to shoot once he hears OP rack the slide.

before buying a bunch of accessories to upgrade your new Mossberg, try it without adding or changing anything, dont turn your new shotgun into a "land anchor" by weighing it down with a bunch of "tactical" stuff

you may find that it's slower to manuever , especially if you had the 590A1 with heavy barrel

they make a Speedfeed stock that would also work well with your SG, less bulky and doesnt rub on your cheek / body, more stream lined appearance

I tried the buttstock style shell carriers and dont really like them, when you shoot heavy loads it shifts or sometimes rubs on your face during recoil.

You need to go to a Front Sight Tactical Shotgun Class and learn how to run the thing.

There is more to it than just racking the slide and pulling the trigger.

Make sure the one you get has rifle sights not a bead!!!!!!

Beads are fine for shooting skeet or birds but this gun is essentially a .73 Caliber Rifle. It is a Tactical Shotgun not a field gun..

You definitely need the shoot the gun before you start modifying it. And going to a 2 or 4 day class will allow you to shoot enough to figure out what is right and what is wrong.

The gun will probably beat the snot out of you until you figure out how to keep your cheek on the stock.

Surprisingly you or anyone else was not born knowing how to do this. You need training and that training will enhance your affinity for the gun.

When you do decide to Mod the gun I vote for Magpul Furniture, a Brownell's Raised Safety, a Velcro Side Saddle and a Side Mounted Sling.

This is how my guns are set up and this setup has evolved over 4 Front Sight Classes. In the last class we shot 500 rounds over 4 days and shooting with only a tee shirt, I didn't even have a mark on my shoulder. A joy to shoot!!!!

After you get serious look into the Vang Comp Process. It makes the gun pattern tight and tames the recoil down alot.

Good Luck and make sure you got Rifle Sights!

My mossberg field gun benefited greatly from replacing the stock butt pad with a Limbsaver. The stock one felt fairly soft but didn’t do much.

I wanted the 590A1 but the cheapest I found was 575. The one I got has bead sight and I wanted that! Also for HD wanted shorter than the 590A1

I do not plan on doing crazy mods, not into that. I may get a sling with shell holders. I do not plan on doing classes, I have shot few shotguns before and I am familiar with them and realized that heavier guns are easier for me to hold and handle than light ones, its weird.

Hahaha....I saw what you did there. Ya 59000, although most of them don't get to close to water on purpose, I see a lot of them every day trying to lead a semi normal life. Having come close to becoming one myself, its a very slippery slope.

Regarding shotguns: Grew up shooting an old double barrel 12 gauge. Purchased an 870 express later for HD and leisure shooting purposes. LEO academy shotgun was the Ithaca M37. More 870’s after that and decided about a year ago or so to grab a 590a1.

I may actually prefer the 590a1. Shoots perfectly and I love the GR sights. Lots of hate out there for the speed feed stocks but my experience has been positive. I was expecting shells to pop out under buck and slug recoil, but everything stayed put. My only quibble is the 590a1 field strip is much more complicated than an 870. Trade off is a better safety position and lefty friendly all around.

I shot mainly 870 but older models, I am assuming pre 90s and they seemed better build then the stuff I checkout at my LGS! Thats what I went with the 590. In the future I want to purchase a over under with auto extractors!

1. Get lots of ammo; all variety. 2. Go out and shoot.

Repeat 1&2 from now on as often as you can afford.

The 590 and 590a1 are both awesome choices. Nicely done, sir!

In addition to the ammo everyone is urging you to buy, here's a couple things to look into:

1. Get a boresnake for 12ga. Makes cleaning so much easier.

2. Get a limbsaver recoil pad made specifically for the 500/590 - especially if you're tall as it helps give you a longer length of pull.

3. Get a bayonet. I mean, what's the point of having a 590 if you're not gonna get a bayonet?

There's a bunch of other stuff to look at... I've tried more crap than I care to think about (bye bye $$$), and my shotgun is mostly back to stock configuration. It honestly just works great out of the box.
