shot VR80 first time this weekend, zero'd iron sights @ 50 yards with Estate 1610 fps 1 oz rifled slugs requiring a mere 3 rds. for sighting-in afterwards was easy to routinely engage a steel silhouette @ 110 yds. The only thing could possibly be better is the bullpup version VRB-100

Pretty simple really. The VR80 uses a commercial buffer tube. So any fixed stock (i used a magpul MOE fixed carbine stock) that uses a commercial buffer tube will work.

The grip I used is a standard generic mil spec A2 grip. I think mine was left over from an Anderson lower parts kit. The grip screw from the VR80 was a different thread pitch than a standard A2 grip screw. So I reused the VR80 grip screw and tossed the screw that came with the A2 grip.

Some brands of fixed stocks, like the MOE Magpul I used, may require some minor modification. With the stock I used you will see that the screw that holds the fixed stock in place does not completely clear the buffer tube (see picture below). You have three choices.

Option 1. You can either file off a little of the stock adapter where it meets the lower receiver to move the adapter forward about 3/16" to clear the buffer tube.
Option 2. You can file the buffer tube. If you file the buffer tube you can always replace it down the road. I chose to file the cheap plastic stock adapter. It took about 5 minutes of filing and test fitting until the screw cleared allowing me to mount the stock.
Option 3. Someone else mentioned that they didn't need to trim their stock at all to make the screw work. So you could try a different fixed stock.

Just be aware of the potential issue.

The whole swap from start to finish was maybe 20 minutes. I did all the work with a file, a Phillip's screw driver and a long 3/16" Allen wrench to remove the old stock. Everything came out very clean. No gaps or any misalignment. I'm very pleased.

I don’t have any pics at the moment, but I used a commercial Hogue buttstock on mine that slide right on with no filing/special fitting, then used a Strike Industries stock lock for fixing the stock. Also put a Hogue rubber grip w/ beavertail and it fits perfect with no gaps(also used existing grip screw). I went all FDE for the color.

On a side note, has anyone found any M-lok handguard heatshields that don’t interfere with the piston gas system? Neither magpul type 1 or 2 really work, and that thing gets hot!

Thinking about a Rock Island VR80, depending on where you got it and where they got it from, either the Juggernaut or Hogue fixed mag kits are installed.

All the ones we have in stock have a Hogue Freedom Fighter kit installed

Anyone know why the ones sold through Turners and Rifle gear have a full top rail while all the others in videos have the slimed down portion in the middle?

It seems like the cali legal vr80 has the full rail, whereas the regular vr80 available in free states has it separated into two, which is the slimmed down portion you were talking about. Haven't seen anything explaining why that is though

I like mine, but it really needed some breaking in. It wouldn't cycle any birdshot or 2 3/4 buckshot loads at first even with the light load piston. So I ran a few mags worth of 3" turkey and duck loads I had left over, and now it's doing better, though my shoulder didn't appreciate it too much lol. My only issue is like the poster above, I was burning my hand after just a few mags, the handguard is too close to the piston. I know slim is in but it wasn't well planned out IMO. You can feel gas hit your hand and all the mlok slots actually let you touch the gas system. I'm searching for super low-pro mlok covers now but haven't found anything yet.

Mines been reliable pretty much from the get go, it definitely needs a thorough cleaning though when new before shooting. I even take mine out hunting now it’s so reliable, both coyote & jackrabbit. It’s a fun hunting gun...
