I recommend you go out to the desert or forest and shoot a few different types of loads. Shooting a shotgun and figuring out what's best for you isn't rocket science.

I use #1 buckshot in my home defense shotgun.

The biggest variable with shotgun rounds is distance. At 5 yards the video's results don't shock me, but try it again at 15 yards. And what is your likely HD distance? Mine is probably 10 yards. But if we have guys who expect to shoot 20 yards, their optimal pellet size will likely be different.

But ... no matter what pellet size I have, I'll be pretty confident at real world distances.

All that said, I use 00.

Yes as I said on the other thread about slugs, there is alot of stuff you can launch out of a shotgun.

Just make sure you don't shoot any of those Gualdo Slugs thru a choke!

They are steel and it won't end well.

I believe your underestimating #8 target loads for home defense. Whats your max distance shot in your house, 30'-40'? They will knock the snot out of anything that close. 00 pellets will keep going through a few walls and maybe hit your kids or wife in another room.

Last night I gave the birdshot option a figurative shot. I pretended to "clear" my house from my second floor bedroom. As soon as I stepped out I realized some issues.

There are many things working together that may obstruct my shot.

Chief among these is that my lack of training to shoot a shotgun from my weak side which seriously hinders getting a good angle at the living room and the kitchen. Ok, so I'll learn to shoot a SG weak handed. Something I am already good at with a handgun.

The stair handrail and its posts will probably stop or weaken birdshot and compromise my safety if I don't get the decisive hit first due to a barrier that could not be reliably defeated by my load. Nothing I can do about that.

My furniture might stop or weaken birdshot. Nothing I can do about that either.

Since I can't improve the performance of birdshot for barriers in my home I'll continue loading with buckshot.

Cool video, I'm convinced 00 for me. If I'm going to kill innocent people in my house why would I care about hurting the neighbors??

Interesting to note #8 Birdshot can penetrate two complete interior walls. So rule #4 still comes into play.

Actually this makes the shotgun slightly less appealing for HD, not completely mind you but slightly.

That being said my HD shootgun is not loaded with 00, because it is not my first option for HD but it is likely my wife's and she prefers a lighter load.

Many love shotguns because they're so versatile. You can use one in an apartment with #4 buckshot with not TOOOOO much penetration OR you can use them with slugs on your ranch where penetration isn't an issue. I will always prefer a shotgun over a handgun with the exception of needing to shoot someone with a 'belly' gun if you are in contact with the BG.

Not according to the video, and definitely not according to FBI recommendations...your goal is to STOP the actor...it is not to provide dove for your dinner.

That said, if birdshot is soooo effective, why not drop down to 20ga or a .410??? Logic definitely fails.

What's fud about what he said? If you shoot someone within 15 yards with #8shot they will at the very least, get hurt. And 00buck will go through a wall even after hitting someone within 10-15 yards.
