I believe your underestimating #8 target loads for home defense. Whats your max distance shot in your house, 30'-40'? They will knock the snot out of anything that close. 00 pellets will keep going through a few walls and maybe hit your kids or wife in another room.

What's fud about what he said? If you shoot someone within 15 yards with #8shot they will at the very least, get hurt. And 00buck will go through a wall even after hitting someone within 10-15 yards.

I asked for some HD ammo recommendations at a small shop. The guy behind the counter deadass offered me Federal #8 shot target load “because it will spread out and you dont have to aim, just point and shoot”.

Well, that would be good if you ever find yourself in a situation like this:

OP, I recommend #4 buck or bigger for home defense.
If you have land or might have to take longer shots (>40 yards), get the Federal Flight Control Wad Shells. It keeps patterns tight out at distance really really well.

Birdshot will work very well at close distances (<10 yards), but it spreads out and loses stopping power really fast unless you're rocking a full choke or something, which on a tactical shotgun, you probably have something more open like a cylinder choke.

#8 20-30 feet away will end an unarmored threat.

00 will end it quicker with less whining and behind light to moderate cover.

Either is going to be potential lethal through a few interior walls. I don't know if "two walls or four" is a key issue. You still need to know what's behind your target.
