    thinking of getting a shotgun

    Good day all.

I am thinking of getting a shotgun. I would like a semi-auto but not one of the tacticals. Would like the wood furniture.

    Uses: Skeet/Trap, hunting.

Thank you in advance for your positive thoughts.

Just note, one shotgun will not be ideal for skeet, trap and hunting.

That said, based on your description I would look at rounding up a 12 gauge Remington 1100 with changeable chokes. Probably can pick up a nice one on the used market for not all that much.

Many people start shotgunning with a Remington 870 pump shotgun. It is probably the most popular shotgun ever sold. Again, you can probably pick one up on the used market for a deal.

There was an almost new in box Rem 11-87 in the classifieds for $550, but it's gone now.

A Rem 1100, Rem 11-87, or a Beretta A300 are your best bets. too bad you don't live down south, I've got all three and you're welcome to shoot them.

        Thoughts on a Winchester model 140 semi-auto?

Ever since Lead was banned in hunting, a simple over / under does not cover it all.

If hunting ducks/ geese, the 870 magnum that shoots the punishing 3 1/2” shells would be my choice.

You can change the chokes. You can shoot light 1 1/8 ounce 2 3/4” shells for trap / skeet / clays.

You can get a really nice over / under with removable chokes for shooting clays.
This should work well as a dove/ upland bird fun too

How much have you shot a shotgun? What are your scores at trap, skeet &5 stand?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

The Mossberg Pro-Series Sporting (#85139). It has nice wood furniture, sets of Hi-Viz sights, Briley Chokes Set in a handy carrying case, and the receiver is cerakoted.

It was produced by Mossberg with input from Gil Ash, a professional shooting instructor. Its a beautiful looking piece....for me.

PS: Many salient internal parts such as the gas piston, rings, etc. are Boron Nitride coated which makes the parts corrosion resistant.

Since you put skeet and trap before hunting.

If you have access to one for less than 100.00 then it may be worth it. But it's not very popular and it may be difficult to fix since it doesn't seem to have a large following regarding third party support. For a little more money, an 1187, 1100 Remington would more likely be a better choice since you can get parts for them anywhere.

Mid priced New semi autos under $700.00 may include: Beretta A300, Franchi Affinity, Stoeger M3000, MK3 M3500

Another vote for the A300. It will do what you ask. Mine does, and it has black plastic.

Well the Benelli m2 is a fantastic semi auto. But I don't think they offer it in wood.

Heard lots of good things about the Remington Versamax too...but again...I don't think they offer it in wood.

How badly do you want wood?

I got a bag of 50 orings from McMaster-Carr for like $8. I googled, and found info at Calguns and other sites.

There are a number of good choices available in a wood-stocked semi:
                            Mossberg 930
                            Weatherby SA-08
                            Beretta A300
Remington 1187, 1100 and Versa Max
                            Winchester SX-3 and SX-4
                            Browning Maxus and Silver

Nothing wrong with a Win 140. I have a Winchester 140 I used for sporting clays before I picked up my Beretta 682. The 140 runs just fine for everything I was pushing through it. 2-3/4", 3 dram loads. I am selling it off to a buddy of mine who wants to get into sporting clays.

                              Best regards,
