Quick tip...when you mount your loader, put a cookie sheet with a rim underneath your loader. I sandwiched a cookie sheet between my loader and my bench, used rubber washers and carriage bolts with wing nuts and now I can remove my loader if needed and any powder or shot spills stay in the sheet. Makes for easy clean-up and using a fine kitchen strainer, you can separate the shot and powder easily and put them back in their respective tubes.

Did you find that 13 grains published some place? I couldn’t find it, don’t see how you can drop 5 grains and be safe?So I shot the Remington hulls loaded with 8shot, red dot 18 grains 1 oz loads, claybuster wads and they worked well. A little warm, so just for fun I bought a bushing that will load 13 grains red dot with everything else being equal.
See how it performs on Friday for skeet at Oak Tree.

Shooting buddy told me about the load. Remington gun club hulls. 13.1 grains red dot, 1oz 8shot. Just enough for his autoloader to cycle however I was going to try it on an Over Under.Last edited by fecalguns; 06-27-2018, 7:03 PM.Comment

13 grains? that's way too low. you'll likely have stack height issues, not to mention poor performance.
17 grains will yield about a 1145 fps load -- that should be plenty soft. If you really want something soft shooting 16g is as low as I would go which would pprobably be around 1100 or slightly under. that's about as slow as you want to go.Comment

The guy told me the 13.1 grain is his load. If I end up losing an almond after trying one, I will go to his house and remove one of his almonds.
They actually load nice using Remington hulls. Fiocchi is a NO GO. The crimp collapses too much.

ummm, and I mean this the kindest way, you are playing a little loose with your components. first by dropping 5 grains because some guy told you 13.1 grain is his load. Is he even using the same powder? Secondly you mention Remington and Fiocchi in the same breath -- you do realize they take completely different wads right? (tapered hull vs straight wall)
Although I don't *think* what you are doing will be catastrophic, better safe than sorry. As a newbie shotshell reloader please stick with published loads.
Load safe, have fun....Comment

We discussed it in details on what powder he is using, hull, and how much shot, including number type. He is using Remington gun club hulls, #8shot 1oz load, 13.1 grains Red Dot. I tried a Fiocchi hull because I have quite a few, but they won't work for this load. Remingtons however work well. BUT I will test this load tomorrow morning. EDIT: Sorry I forgot wad info. And how, exactly, will you "test" this load? Planning to tie your gun to an old tire and pull the trigger with a string from behind a big tree? You seem to be violating a basic principle of safe reloading.BUT I will test this load tomorrow morning.Comment

I guess I'm confused. If it's a light load, won't the worst case be a stuck wad inside the barrel which I will check after the first shot? The only change with this load and the first batch that I already shot yesterday is the powder charge. Yesterday's load was exactly the same components except for the amount of grains. I switched from a bushing #29 which is 17.1 grains to a bushing #23 which is 13.1 grains. Is that alone a serious issue if that is the only change?
