It's funny how some people will decide to buy one gun over the other based another person's preference. It's hard to go wrong with either shotgun. Go fondle both models before making your decision.

Both the 870 and the 500 are workhorses. The main difference is Remington (IIRC) receiver is still steel while Mossberg's have alway been aluminum. The 500 I have owned for years is a plain jane 18" barrel and it shoots like a champ, but I've never put a single 3 inch round through it. Aluminum and 3 inch shells make me nervous.

870's are always far more solid in feel than just about any Mossberg. For my money, I own both.

I've owned both. The 870 magazine tube is easily extended if you want to use the same shotgun for hunting and "social purposes", as opposed to the 500. Otherwise, it's which one feels better with regard to control placement, etc. Either one will serve you well.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

I'd recommend an Ithaca 37 as the top choice, but that wasn't a right answer.

Flip a coin...if you want to mall-ninja the gun, the 870 has more aftermarket stuff available...for the money, the 500/590 is a better value. Both will last forever.

              My $0.02

I own a Moss 500, all tacti-cooled out, ATI pistol grip / top folder, Forward pistol grip, head shield, ghost rings, 6 shell holder on the side, 5 shell holder on the stock...i've shot many Rem 870s

If you are going to tacti-cool out your gun, start with a Rem 870, the forearm on the Moss 500 and the action bars are real flimsy, fine for a stock forearm, but too flimsy and too much wobble if you want to use a forward pistol grip

plus in stock form, the Moss 500 safety is awesome, on top of the reciever, good for both rightys and leftys, but if you change the stock or run a pistol grip, it makes the safety harder to reach and less useful

Plus the screw on barrel cap design of the Moss 500 limits your magazine capacity, Rem 870's are easy to get extensions for.

If you want to leave stock and plink and occasionally shoot trap etc, get Moss 500

If you want to trick out, get Rem 870

Big 5 Moss combo is $250 with two barrels, but if you aren't going to use the two barrels like me, then the extra $49 for a Rem 870 ($299) would have been more worth it for me

I just went and had a look at the Moss 500 at Big 5. I had nearly decided to buy it based on discussions here, but after seeing it, I don't know if I will. It definitely looks cheap. I know it is a <$300 gun, but how much more would you have to spend to get a little bit nicer of a gun?

honestly, i chose the mossberg alone just at the fact that the slide safety's in the WRONG PLACE! you have to take your hand off the trigger everytime you shoot. now thats just dumb. yeah, its a little sloppier. i kinda figure the remingtons like an ar and mossbergs like an AK, remington feels good and tight, but will probably have some little problems. mossbergs will be a bit loose and sloppy but will fire every time. go check them out for yourself for 30 misn and compare. see which one feels best for you
