    Mossberg 500 or Remington 870?

So I already have my Binelli Nova, but now I want a gun that I can customize. I'd kinda like to build a slug gun with real sights (ghost ring) and a rifled short barrel. I have no experience with the Remington, but I've fired the Mossberg 500 and I like it. However, the 500 is a pain to strip and clean as the slide rails fall all over the place. Maybe I'm just spoiled cuz my Binelli has the slide rails molded into the slide - is the 870 built the same way as the Mossberg? How's it field strip?

Also, is the same aftermarket availability of barrels and sights and such in place for the Mossberg as for the Remington? Thanks guys =)

i would personally choose the 500 over the 870 any day.

i don't like the action release on the 870. what were they thinking when they placed it where they did?

i will say the fit and finish on the 870 is slightly better, but i've had 870's jam up and not eject properly. my mossberg 500 has never had any hiccups and shoots true every single time.

as for stripping the 500... you've got to be kidding! i can field strip and clean my 500 in less than 10 minutes! reassembling the bolt slide and cartridge stop can be a pain... but honestly, you'll get used to it after the first or second time stripping it.

I have the 870 and the mossberg 590. I personally like the 870 much better then the 590. The 590 seems more sloppy to me. my stock ratteled loose while plinking one day and i had to tighten the stock up, just little things like that.

On the same side i am not bad mouthing the mossberg at all. Put it this way, i would trade my 590 for an 870 any day of the week. I just would stick to the 870.

500s and 870s are like civics and preludes..... theres abundence of parts for them both

mossberg is the way to go, shot a 870 and prefer the 500

I've shot trap with both a lot. My differentiation is more monetary. 870s are generally more expensive than the 500s and I see no reason to pay any kind of premium. If you get a good deal on a used 870, go for it. Otherwise, you can always get the 500+2 barrel combination for ~$250 at big5.

Thanks for that write-up! I was sold the second I read about the slide release position. That's my only gripe with my Benelli Nova - the slide release is on the right side and close to the trigger, but it still requires shifting the whole hand around on the grip to activate it enough that I have to loosen my shooting grip and then reset it. Mossberg 500 it is.

Since I'll be putting various tactical and aftermarket goodies on it, anyone know where I can find a good used Mossberg 500?

Remington 870 is probably the most popular pump shotgun ever made,I had a Mossberg 9200 semiauto steel barrel with a light weight aluminum receiver, 3 inch magnum shotgun grenade on me with my win aa 2 3/4 inch hunting loads vowed never to buy anything made by this company.I have a Rem 870 Wingmaster with 3 barrels:trap, skeet & field with remchokes. My 870 has had thousands of rounds fired thru it,I bought it used from the wife of the owner who was a trap & skeet shooter.I convinced my friends to buy Rem 870's because they're durable, parts are available anywhere, anyone can strip it down for cleaning or repair and first & foremost they're made of steel .

I've owned both. I personally like the fit, finish, feel of the 870 over the 500. The 870 just feels solid and not as sloppy as my 500 did.

                        Its taste & Preference.

I like the 870 more because the pump forearm art is nice and tight , the 500 seems shaky to me...

The 500 is a little loose but both should go bang when fired. I went with the 870 even though it was a little more money I think it's worth it.

I hunt with an 870. I have a 500 for home defense, and actually today bought a 870 home defense model...I am very used to the controls of the 870 due to many hours of hunting. Since I use the 870 soo often I am making the switch to the 870 in the home. It just makes sense to me, by the way I am not selling the 500...I will be keeping a good shot gun it will just be in the back of the safe now. I would look at both and find out which one "feels" better.

                            Both are good imo.

I'm an 870 fan. It's a fantastic gun and really easy to strip/clean. It just feels really solid and looks quality.
