Poor eyesight: Bead, ghost ring or ?

Why is it that when I'm out hunting and I call for the bird, nothing happens? And if you shoot clays low gun, you eliminate the step of verifying your mount. Keep it simple, eh?

I do shoot everything (games) low gun, but most don't.

I shot high gun when learning most the games, but since my real interest was field shooting, I converted. Now high gun feels really odd to me.

Albeit my mount is likely not as consistent as someone shooting high gun and verifying their sight picture. It's certainly another variable.

The bigger issue is in your head...... don't over think it.....it should just feel right when you pull the trigger

Same problem to some degree. Went to real eye doctor, got shooting glasses and my Franchi came with red FO...shooting is easy now...regularly hit 23 to 25 out of 25.

Yep I misread. I'm shooting clays.

Don't look at the bead, focus hard on the clay and shoot when you "feel" the moment is right. It will take a bit of practice to get this right, try shooting straight away targets only until you get it down, it'll help a lot.

Remember, do not look at the bead.

If you are cross eye dominate you have exactly two choices. You can either close one eye, or you can shoot left handed. I'd recommend the former as it is easier. If you can't close one eye then put a piece of tape on your left eye lens.

As far as the front sight is concerned XS makes a real nice Tritium Powered Front Sight that Glues on with JB Weld over your Front Bead.

It is very prominent in the day light and impossible to miss at night. I have one on my HD Shotgun and believe me, you will have no problems seeing it day or night.

Have your dominance tested. Have an optmetrist examine your eyes and get a prescription if necessary. Then sign up for the SoCal Calguns skeet clinic to have a one on one with instructors for mount and gun fit. Make sure to pull Trapperjohn(clinic coordinator) aside for a consult on prescription shooting glasses. He owns an optics lab and knows his chit. I did all of the above and can't even tell you how screwd up I was. I had a rifle mount. I had a too low comb and cast was too centered. I could not get a solud cheek weld and was lifting my head off the stock when I took the shot. I was focused squarely on my barrel and bead to find a lead, not the other way around. I was rolling my shoulders and not my hips and knees so I was missing under. So much wrong looking back. Don Zeigler and CaptainDick figured me out and Dave fitted me with optics. You gotta get past the fundamentals before the mental/intuitive level kicks in.

I can tell you this much. When shooting a moving target you never look at the barrel, bead, or sight. The bigger or brighter the obstruction the more it blocks your shot and messes with your periferal judgment. Look at Kim Rhodes shoot. She holds low gun, watches for the target, locks onto target with eyes while lifting the gun and pulls the trigger when the stock touches her shoulder. Not at any time did she look at the barrel.

I only shoot sporting clays to practice for FITASC. It's an international game that mandates low gun, you can't mount the gun until you see the bird in flight.

So it's, low gun, call pull, see the bird in flight, mount the gun, kill the bird.

AT NO TIME SHOULD YOU EVER LOOK AT THE BEADS OR BARREL.

Everything you know about rifle shooting, is wrong for shooting a shotgun.
