    Why “hulls”

This made me wonder, why are empty shotgun shells referred to as Hulls?
    Is there a history there?

    If I had to guess...

It would likely be tied to "hull" being the name applied to seed pod shells; with the shotgun pellets being seen as equivalent to the seeds.

    But, that's just a guess.

Shotguns initially had brass shells and were called shells...

When they dumped all brass and went to brass base and paper walls, they were renamed Hulls...

Never asked and never heard why they changed the name to Hull for empty paper or plastic shotgun shells

        Another question.

        What is proper?

Shotgun shell, shot shell or shotshell?

What He Said..... It seems that the term "Hull" is used to identify anything that's empty as in the empty "Hull" of a ship, aircraft, seed pod, etc.
