How to permanently render a shotgun inoperable

I would like to permanently render a shotgun I'm inheriting inoperable so I can just use it as a display piece. What is required that I do to it?

Depends on the specific gun, but you said "permanently," so a welder can take care of that. If you tell us what the gun is, we may try to convince you to not do anything horrible to a classic. There are ways to make a gun inoperable that are pretty effective without being permanent.

That would do it... simply remove it. Keep the pin somewhwere secure and in 20-30 minutes you can have a working gun again.

If you need to decommission it beyond any practical hope of being restored to working condition (thus, still in the eyes of the law, no longer a firearm)I believe there are additional steps required.

Shotguns come in very many variations so it would be best to give the make and model or at the very least the type of shotgun.

like is it a pump , double barrel, single barrel , over and under , side-by-side, semi auto ...etc. ?

If you're not sure what it is, more than likely somewhere on the barrel or frame it'll state a maker and possibly the model number or name.

As for making it an non-firearm I believe you have to cut the receiver into three pieces and if you do that it's not going to look that nice as a display piece.

But on the bright side maybe you can take enough parts out of the guts and resell those to help someone who could use them and put some money in your pocket and then you would have a gun that could not be fired.

but I do believe that I would advise, I like most people here, that you just keep any parts you remove like firing pin or other internals in a safe spot in case the person you pass the shotgun down to or sell it to might want to enjoy it as it was intended to be.

Why not just display it as is?

If the firing pin is difficult to remove, here is an option. Once you make it inoperable, how are you going to make sure it stays where it’s displayed?

Maybe an anchor and some thin cable?

since I think what you are asking is how to not make it a gun anymore in the eyes of the law - I believe that it is something like remove or weld the internal firing mechanisms (hammers firing pin & sear) and plug the chamber and firing pin holes

OP, I would be a little more specific on what you have

It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Well, it sounds like he wants to make it completely inoperable to display in like a living room.

That way, if someone were ever to break in and steal it, he would not be liable. That is just my assumption from what he posted. Unfortunately, with the way California laws are, he would be better off to go that route. Maybe he just wants to see it everyday for memories sake, never plans to sell or shoot it.

Why ruin a gun? At the most remove the firing pin.

Sell it and buy an air soft copy.

I understand I was vague. It was on purpose. I will be inheriting it. Let's just say the gun is in illegal configuration and I would like to legally keep it that way for display purposes. It's a Stevens Browning 621 12ga pump if it could be legally processed it would be of significant historical and monetary value once authenticated. However, there is no way to legally own it in California. I would like it to be disabled and displayed.
