Sights for a Mossberg 590A1

I have the stripped down version with the little bead sight. What are you guys using?
Nothing fancy, just something that would work for rifled slugs that are plug and play..

For plug and play you're going to need to put a rail on the receiver and throw on a red dot or buy a barrel with a front sight and buy the matching sights for the receiver.

I have never seen one, they are usually soldered on. The bead screws into a little tiny hole in the barrel, not very conducive for a large sight to mount to.

What are you using it for and at what distances? One can be fairly accurate with slugs and a bead sight it they practice with it.
Another option would to be using a heat shield that has sights mounted on it but it would need to be secured so that it doesn't shift.

My 590A1 has the factory ghost ring.

This one requires the receiver to be drilled/tapped ( are all 590s d&t'd these days? ) but the front sight is clamp on.

I purchased the factory ghost ring as an after-market. Had to take the barrel to a gunsmith to have the front sight installed, but it works well.

I even use it in Skeet, much to my coach's chagrin.

Just remember that the 590A1 has a thicker barrel and a clamp on that work on a 500 or 590 may not work on a 590A1.

Practice makes <mediocre with slugs. 590 is NOT a precision instrument, so...

Ive always been amazed at how well a shotgun will shoot rifle slugs. I guess that I'm just looking to try something new. I have a couple red dots, maybe I'll try one out, see how well they shoot. I have maverick 88 that I can try out too..

I have played a little musical chairs with red dots on the 590 and they didn't work well for bird/target load shooting clays. I shoot more of that with it than anything else.
Cheaper ammo and clays keep the eye sharp. YMMV.
Red dot worked best shooting slugs.
However, once I got used to shooting slugs using the bead it was much easier.
590 remains uncluttered, lighter and works well for everything I shoot. Just the bead.

I use a cheapo red fiber optic front sight for my 590 because my eyes aren't what they used to be. It screws into the same hole the original brass bead screws into. I find that practice makes the biggest difference in landing slugs on target.

I'm looking at a variety of sights for my M500. Go look at Brownell's or Midway USA they both have many.

I actually have two guns a 20" bbl'd one with rifle sights and a 18" HD gun I am working on right now.

The 18" gun is for home use only and it is going to get an XS Tritium Big Dot that Glues on over the existing bead or replacement bead that comes with the sight. This is easy to do and using JB Weld it is permanent. Instructions showing how to install this sight are on Youtube.

The lighted bead will work well indoors and be easy to pick up. A bead is fine at conversational distances out to 100 yards if necessary. Rifle Sights are more precise but simply not necessary for shooting Buckshot at intruders. With slugs yes.

Another hot tip is to goto a Shotgun Class at Front Sight or school of your choice. This will teach you how to run the gun efficiently which is far more important than what type of sight is on it. I did, and it completely changed the way I look at shotguns for Social purposes.

Much better than handguns. 3 months ago if you violated my home I would have shot you with my .45, and you may have died. Now I would shoot you with a load of Reduced Recoil 00 Buck and you would definitely die, and I can say that with absolute certainty!

Lots of good advice, thanks too all. How did the red dots hold up to high base loads?

I installed the clamp on front sight and bolt on rail from my link above a few minutes ago, so far so good. I hope to take it out soon.
This 590 has the 18.5"barrel, so its more for a HD gun...mostly 00 buck and a couple slugs at the end.
