Curious. Why would the strength of the load matter in a pump?

Extractor is not an issue. If your gun works better because of an aftermarket extractor it is because you perceive it to. The Remington MIM extractor is perfect because is made from a powder metal and machine injected molded. The solid steel extractors were flawed for years as they were improperly chamfered and other machining issues. However, about two years ago Remington finally found a vendor who could make them very close to specifications of the MIM one. Yet, some still have flaws upon occasion where the MIM does not.JD McGuire, Owner

Good info there aippi. Thanks for that. This was true for the "Express" only, or WM's in that time frame? Again, thanks.Comment

It's the shells. Took my Beretta a300 out (that I've never had an issue with) and it was jamming (failure to eject) with the herters shells. I'm going to contact Cabelas tomorrow. I was shooting estate without a hiccup. The moment I put in the herters shells, I had issues.Comment

Mine too!!
My 870 express extractor will tear the lip off while jammingAmmo may be a contributing factor. All of my fte's have been with winchester or one other brand, i don't recall which, that have a similar round profile on the rim. Federals (the other $20/100 walmart option) and many other brands have a sharper profile which seems to be more reliable (no issues) in my m500 and 870, as well as my buddies vepr 12 and weatherby pump all of which were jam-o-matics on winchesters. If i do find myself with winchesters i just feed them to my sxs. Not to say all of those shotguns could not be made to operate reliably with winchesters, but just buying ammo they like is a simple fix.
winchester or herters .... so I feed federal only.. problem solved

I have an 870 police mag that will shot any kind of 12ga ammo I put in it. I also have an 870 super mag that does not like the estate cheap stuff or the winchester but it shoots the federal bulk just fine. I want to polish the chamber but it's kinda hard when I work 55 hour weeks and I'm lazy on my free time from work

Wow, I see what you mean. Lots of grooves outside of the chamber. Took a dremel to it and then the 0000 steel wool. Polished it up. No more grooves now. Other 870 barrel is the same way.My 870 tactical had this issues with walmart lowbrass some metal polish amd a wheel did the tricks its not so much in the chamber. Grabbed fired Herter's shells, inserted, pulled trigger and racked hard. Same issue with 3/10 of the shells.
Will try the new extractor. If that doesn't do it, it's the shells, which I suspect it is because of the jamming it did on my very reliable a300.Comment

I've owned 2 different 870s...one of them had this problem every 10-20 rounds or so, the other one had it happen only a handful of times everWent and shot my 870 for the first time. Shells were not ejecting. Put a brass brush with oil in drill and cleaned up the chamber. Also read not to pull back while firing. I could have been doing this - magpul stock was too long.
Went to put back together and the spring retainer piece flew in the air. Spent too much time in the hot garage looking for it.
Is this a necessary piece?
it mostly happened on cheap (brass) target loads but happened plenty of times while waterfowl hunting with quality brass ammo
It would fail to eject because the extractor would slip off the rim of the brass and leave it stuck in the barrel...
The next pump I bought was a Mossberg 500 which has dual extractors..thousands of rounds and it's never happened
Now I shoot semi autos and over unders far more than pumps, but I'd buy the Mossberg now simply for that reason.
The 870 VS 500 debate will never be settled. Most of the differences are personal preference but the dual extractors on the Mossberg makes the decision easy for meComment
