    Remington 870 advice - update post 54

Went and shot my 870 for the first time. Shells were not ejecting. Put a brass brush with oil in drill and cleaned up the chamber. Also read not to pull back while firing. I could have been doing this - magpul stock was too long.

Went to put back together and the spring retainer piece flew in the air. Spent too much time in the hot garage looking for it.

    Is this a necessary piece?

Found it - it fell on top of the garage door.

I pull with my grip hand and push with the forend hand when I go to break the shot. On mine and my son's Express actions you need to work at it to put enough force into pulling the forearm back smartly for good ejection. I had to shorten up my Magpul too, too much recoil with a longer length of pull to suit me.

Polished the barrel 3 times now using the cleaning rod, bronze brush, wrapped with 0000 steel wool. I had some empties in the trash. Put in the chamber and ejected it without issues. The empties go in a little easier now. Will test out while dove hunting.

Are you using brass shells or steel? Have heard of problems with steel shells, especially 870s.

I had some old (fired) estate steel shells and they slipped in and out very easily. I was shooting Herters ammo (think it's brass). I'll run a box through it on Friday morning and report back. I'll keep polishing the chamber until it works.

I just bought an 870 not long ago. I've had no issues with the estate shells

The rough chamber problem is with the express, the Wingmaster gets a lot more polish and finish work then it does.
It's good advice of anyone owning a express 870 to give it a good chamber polish.
A bore brush, wrapped with 4/0 steel wool and 5-10 minutes with a high speed drill will work wonders!

Ammo may be a contributing factor. All of my fte's have been with winchester or one other brand, i don't recall which, that have a similar round profile on the rim. Federals (the other $20/100 walmart option) and many other brands have a sharper profile which seems to be more reliable (no issues) in my m500 and 870, as well as my buddies vepr 12 and weatherby pump all of which were jam-o-matics on winchesters. If i do find myself with winchesters i just feed them to my sxs. Not to say all of those shotguns could not be made to operate reliably with winchesters, but just buying ammo they like is a simple fix.

If the problem continues polish out the tool marks on the "barrel tab" that fits into the receiver. This really helped me out after polishing the barrel itself.

Sorry, no pic & don't know the technical term, but it's the extension off the breach end that the bolt locks into. Some (mine included) have horrible tooling marks that seem to hang up expended shells. I polished the chamber first & it helped, but after smoothing out the barrel "tab/extension" it seems to have resolved all issues......

Could a rough chamber cause the extractor to slip off a shell rim when pumping the action after firing?

My 870 express had this happen a couple times last year hunting dove. I pumped and the bolt came back with the spent shell remaining in the chamber causing a jam as the new shell popped up from the magazine behind the spent shell. Big hassle.

Once I cleared the fresh shell I was able to easily extract the spent shell by closing the chamber and pumping again. It would eject easily on that second attempt.

Rough chamber, weak extractor spring, dull extractor claw?
