Although I own a 12ga trap gun, I enjoy shooting skeet with a 20ga even more. Sporting clays are also fun.

I have a 800 dollar o/u cz canvasback, with 10 to 15 thousand rounds thru it, never an issue, have hit 75 straight at trap, nothing wrong with lower budget gun's when your just starting out!

Yes shooting I do a plenty, started with clay pigeons at my local range but found that the 18.5 inch barrel on my M4 is not the most efficient way to start. So that is why I am looking for a shotgun that is more specific to the sport.
I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

An 870 Wingmaster will do anything and everything you will ever need to do with a shotgun. I prefer them to Model 12s.

Oh-oh. You could start a range war with that. But, I'm on your side.

A model 12 is still the best looking shotgun ever made and it sounds like a real gun when you run the slide.
The 870 sounds like it is made out of recycled tuna fish cans but that aside they shoot very well and meet all of your criteria.
A 870 1100 or model 12 will do it all.
Get a 30 inch barrel and a trap stock not a hunting stock.
The higher stock allows you to view the bird without covering it up.
Go on you tube and look for Herb Parsons videos. He throws 7 clay pigeons in the air and breaks them pumping a model 12 unaltered.

For that matter, so will most any other well built field shotgun.

Not true. There are some guns that are as versatile as an 870 Wingmaster 12ga, but not many. Try putting a slug barrel and scope on an O/U. Try finding a slug barrel for a Model 12. Try finding an HD barrel for an Ithaca 37. Try shooting skeet with an LC Smith 32" Long Range. Try changing the chokes on a Rem 31. You can probably do all those things with enough money and effort, but not nearly as easily as you can with an 870. Those things are easy to shoot, easy to maintain, easy to modify, and every part or accessory you will ever need is readily available, new and used. And they don't break firing pins like Model 12s. OP is new to trap and on a budget. There is no better choice than an 870.

There was a time when the Model 12 (and later the model 1200), were trap guns of choice for many trap shooters. I have a Model 1200 Trap gun that was built in the Winchester custom shop in 1967, and it will easily run straights for you.

If you're just starting out, the Winchester 12, 1200, and Mossberg 500 are all excellent choices for budget trap guns. And bonus - get one with screw in chokes, and you can take it to the skeet field....... which is a lot more fun than trap, anyway. Those gray haired fellows at the trap field that TheFeeder mentioned tend to be a grumpy lot, but the fellows at the skeet field are hard partyers by comparison.

I would highly recommend checking out the CZ over/unders. They are very reasonably priced and well made. I love my Redhead Premier for what it's worth.
