I believe the sales guy told me the 28" barrel comes with a fixed modified choke (that was barrel on the 500 when I was inspecting it). I forgot to ask about the 18.5 barrel.

18.5 barrel is fixed choke / cylinder bore.
The combo pack fixed choke barrel is a modified choke...good for shooting clay pigeons and other uses.

As said above, the Mossy 500 is a good gun for a good price given your intended use. But it's crappy if you're going to go with a pistol grip. The issue is the placement of the safety.

Plan on going the Magpul furniture route, so no pistol grip. Safety is actually big reason I purchased it, because I shoot lefty with long guns since Im left eye dominant

It's a decent buy because you get two barrels.

But that particular shotgun does not have a standard mossberg 500 action slide tube. It uses the cheesy one piece forend. If you are planning to swap out the forend, you must purchase an action slide tube and nut.

Actually you will have to, that forend is utter crap and will break on you. Expect to spend another $75-100 for a new forend/tube/nut.

I bought my first Mossberg 500 from Big 5 in 1974, a 12ga. hunter model w/a 28" barrel and adjustable choke, I think I paid $120 for it. They were a great shotgun then and still are today.

                    The big 5

Mossberg 500 combo is a great first SG choice.

                    And goes on sale regularly

Nonsense. If you use them to jack up your car maybe. But normal use, last you a lifetime. If they were that bad/weak, Mossberg wouldn't be as popular and well selling as they are. They are a damn good and reliable shotgun.

If you know what you want is a home defense shotgun, you probably could have saved some money by shopping the used shotgun market here at calguns or at your local gunstores, if you are patient and diligent.

However you can't go too wrong with that Big5 sale. At worst you can resell that shotgun for a small loss and chalk up the experience as a year long shotgun rental!

good deal on a shotgun that i'd trust my life with in a defensive situation. my personal preference in a pump shotgun for defensive application is an older Remington 870 Wingmaster, but l've always liked the lighter weight of the Mossberg 500.

like any weapon that you'd use for defensive application, know your shotgun and know that it works as it should before tasking it in that role.
