I'm glad we got past the "issue" of the M4 being an AW. That's nonsense talk for practically every M4 that presently resides in CA (collapsible stock has never been legal on M4 and new laws don't affect it at all). A lot aren't 922r compliant, but that's another story.

OP...I'm assuming you've shot both M2 and M4? You mention the M2 is easier to handle. It is LIGHTER, but the M4 is one of softest shooting shotguns there is...it literally burps shells downrange. With that said there are a crap-ton more M2's used in 3-gun than M4's.

      Price may be a factor
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

That and it seems like those guys tend to like the 21 or 24 inch ribbed field barrel with the bead sight and a long mag tube which could maybe risk being shot off with an 18 inch barrel hehe. The m4 doesn't offer much variability with barrel length or sights

More/thicker/heavier metal in more places. So, if that's not important to you because you're not abusive to your shotgun, then I can see the appeal of the lighter M2.

I'll admit that the half the appeal to me of the M4 is it's military background, but I also like that it's the only M-series Benelli with a gas system which (apparently when also combined with the added heft) results in a substantially reduced recoil. Reduced recoil = more fun when rapid firing
An extra 2# of gun weight will reduce recoil more than any gas system.

And this whole standard tube fed shotguns becoming AW's is BS. DOJ is having some growing pains since they aren't sure which end the bullets (or shot) come out. Ordinarily, I wouldn't want to "be that guy" who fought a charge and created case law, but in this instance I wouldn't mind so much. DOJ is clearly outside the recent law in their draft regulations and/or interpretations of them.

I will simply note that the ATF has responded in writing to specific written inquiries of people asking to modify their m4 from the 5 round magazine configuration the gun is sold with to an increased 7 round magazine. And based on the ATF's response, it sure seems clear that they feel that 922r is relevant here.

For those who are curious how 922(r) relates specifically to the M4, ATF has spelled it out:

Out of the following 14 parts, no more than 10 may be non-US-made
              Receiver
              Barrel
              Bolt
              Bolt carrier
              Gas piston
              Trigger housing
              Trigger
              Disconnector

              Hammer
              Buttstock
              Pistol Grip
              Forearm/handguard (forend)
              Magazine body
              Follower

Items in red are difficult or impossible to replace. Items in green are easier.

To bring a 7rd-magazine M4 into compliance, most people use:
              -US-made magazine tube w/ follower
              -US-made buttstock w/ pistol grip

If you want to use the Benelli collapsing buttstock, suddenly you also need to replace 2 additional items - in this case, most people add:
              -US-made forend
              -US-made hammer

I'm not sure how many people actually replace the hammer, versus just saying that they did, as it's impossible to visually tell the difference. If you do replace the hammer, you may want to hang on to your receipt just to be safe.

Also note that I'm fairly certain that no individual has ever been charged with a 922(r) violation. But technically, it's a law that is on the books, and we're supposed to follow it.

That's a good summary, although I wouldn't say the trigger and disconnector are significantly more difficult to replace than the hammer. If you're comfortable taking the fire control group half way apart, what's a little further down the rabbit hole?

I didn't note the OP mentioned a concern with a Title II weapon.

See above. Was OP asking about changing magazines?

I replaced my hammer and it is absolutely obvious that is has been replaced because it has a big ole US stamped right on it

No experience with fredomfighter tactical hammers.....but I've seen those stamped with a big ole US on them also and they are a raw metallic color versus the OEM black color

I also wouldn't say the trigger and disconnector are hard to replace...once you rip into the fire control group to do a hammer....the other 2 are right there.
