On a whim this evening, I ordered this Mossberg barrel for my Remington 870. I noticed afterwards the website shows it to be "blue" and not "matte." Does anyone have any experience with this barrel? Will it match the matte finish on my 10 year old 870 Express, and is it a direct replacement with the 28" barrel and the associated (4+1? I don't remember) round magazine tube? If it isn't the same finish, could I hit it with some flat engine paint and it'd be close enough?

from the link, looks like a barrel made by Mossberg for a RemingtonComment

Looks like it's good to go fit wise. Finish is hard to see in those picks. I doubt it'll be terribly noticeable. You might could take some steel wool to the barrel and rub it with oxhpo blue. That stuff usually turns out flatter and blacker in light coats, especially unrubbed.Comment

I have a Rem Express 870 in matte. Some years ago I picked up a used blue barrel with rifle sights. Works just fine. It may not match, but I'm more concerned at looking at what I'm going to shoot with it than what it looks like.
I wouldn't mix stainless and blue............maybe. Enjoy your barrelsigpicComment

That's correct. I've got the big 28" barrel and though I have a Mossberg 500 with a Knox stock and stuff, I want options for the 870. I think it'd be cool to have a traditional wood and steel shotgun to tote around but now that I think about it I believe the barrel and receiver won't match. Not that it matters that much, I suppose.Comment

You could, before this ships, cancel that order then create a new order for a matte finish barrel. Remington makes one that Midway USA sells: a parkerized (matte) 18.5" MOD-choke rifle-sights-with-Tritium-inserts barrel. It may cost twice as much, but it's got night sights and it's a factory barrel.
I do have that Mossberg-made-for-870 blued, bead-sight barrel you're talking about; it's on one of my Wingmasters. It shoots straight. Can't go wrong other than the finish not matching your receiver.
I have parkerized and blued barrels on my blued Wingmaster receivers:

being a purist, i'd cancel the order and invest the time to find a Remington factory OEM correct same time-period barrel for the 870. there are barrels available on ebay and Gunbroker. this is my personal preference; YMMV.
the most important matters of buying from the online auction is checking the seller's feedback from past buyers and finding a seller with a return policy that is buyer friendly.Last edited by bsg; 09-17-2016, 9:53 AM.Comment

Yes, Mossberg makes a barrel for the 870, I have one and it works great.
Paint it matte black, problem solvedComment

Mossberg makes good stuff and the barrel will function as well as any correct or OEM barrel from Remington.
In my opinion the blue/black barrel finish will make a cool contrast with the matte receiver and magazine tube.karma ?
The blessings I experience every day are far better than the wrath I deserve.
Thankfully, there is no such thing as karma.

I think a nice blued barrel will look damn fine on your gun. Blueing is, if you consider the cost a superior finish. I'm assuming your not building a period correct show car, or future collector gun, but a shooter. I think the barrel you purchased will serve your purpose admirably.Comment
