    Remington 870 Quality Questions?

I heard Remington 870s quality have went down ever since they got bought out by another company. I was wondering if those issues has been resolved or still there. And what models and year were affected by the buyout. Thank you!

    They are perfectly fine.
Also, I have an 18 inch barrel if you need one.

They still work. The newer ones don't have nearly as nice of a finish and are prone to surface rust which isn't a big deal but irritating. I'd get a used older wingmaster if you want to hunt with it. For a HD gun the new ones work fine.

Mine is about 2 years old, well over 1,000 rounds and not a problem.

Remington Arms was acquired by Cerberus in 2007, if that's of any help.
I have a couple of Remington shotguns, but these were bought prior to 2007.
I'm in no position to have an opinion on quality control over Remington's product lines.

          See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_Arms
          for more info.

I do have an opinion on Remington/Marlin's customer service methods and they can be annoyingly difficult to personally get a long gun sent back for service.
If you should ever need to, Remington/Marlin will have UPS pick it up at your designated location.
          Comments:
-pickup times cannot even be estimated. It can be anywhere between 0800-1800 hours.
-the long gun can be left out unattended if that's more convenient and safe for you.
-you cannot bring the boxed long gun to UPS yourself. UPS must pick it up, although there may be an exception, which is if UPS tries, but cannot execute the pickup.
-upon return to the same location, someone must be available to sign, which is common to any return of a firearm.
-these methods are more convenient for a business which is normally open for business and not a residence unless you plan to be home the entire day.

Bought an 870 in 2012 and the park job is a joke. Surface rust from finger prints, poorly fit MIM parts etc. Buy an older 870 or new Mossberg.

I've never loved the Mossberg but at this stage of the game , it's what I'd buy over the 870

Current production is not terrible but not exceptional either. I bought one of the cheapo base models as a project gun when it was on sale. Pleasantly surprised with the fit despite what the internet has to say. The platform for my front bead was slightly off and Randal had to grind it down to mount the Trijicon/Scattergun Tech sights I had bought. If you want a better finish go with one of the "upgraded" tactical models. If it is going to be exposed to the elements then plan on coating it or just rattle can it with VHT High Heat engine enamel.

My buddy has an 870 express. The barrel where the shells seat (not sure the technical names) has burrs in it. He has a lot of ejecting issues and chambering issues. When he tries to eject the round it just flops around in the chamber and doesn't launch out.

Ive read a lot of posts about issues like that. Maybe they had a bad run during a certain time period. Not sure if he got it straightened out. I knew he polished the barrel where the burrs were, and took a fine file and sharpened up the extractor.

Didn't deter me from buying one. I dros'ed one last week and my pick up date is saturday for an 870 tactical express. They feel good in my hands and i like the lighter weight over my heavy 590a1

My newest 870 is a police magnum with a 2012 manufacture date.

There is nothing wrong with the parkerizing, I oil it once in a while just like a blued gun which is what you are supposed to do.

That shotgun came with some of the nicest walnut furniture I have ever seen, I actually put that furniture on one of my older Wingmasters when I bought a short Hogue stock and a GG&G forend.

I will admit I had trouble extracting shells with low cut brass when the gun was brand new, I posted about it here and aippi told me how to fix it - took me a whole 30 minutes of polishing the chamber and ever since doing that I have not had one failure to extract.

Spend the extra money on an 870 Police Magnum its a much better product than the express guns and the newer Mossbergs. I had a Mossberg 500 for 25 years it was good shotgun but not great like the 870P.

This is exactly what I've seen every time I've gone to Sportsmans' Warehouse in the past couple of years. It's guys complaining about returns of 870's etc... I know the older ones have been great, even for police work. Never known one to fail in almost 30 years of using them, but the newer ones people have bought lately..... I'd stick to acquiring something made 20+ years ago, if it was still serviceable. Pick one up, you can immediately tell the difference and see it in the fit / finish.

I have a couple of older Mossberg 500's and can attest to their durability, but the things make a rattle sound if you shake them. Feel kind of cheesy in the fore end, but they're extremely durable and shoot well. I use them for ducks and geese. No malfunctions or problems, ever.

Get an older one if you can. I have a newer police type and it has a plastic THG and plastic butt stock/fore end. Am gonna swap these parts out soon for real furniture and steel.
