Put the IC (Improved Cylinder) in the 1st (bottom barrel) and the M (Mod) in the 2nd (top barrel), and set the barrel selector switch so that you see 1 dot. Your 1st shot will be from the bottom barrel and your 2nd shot will be from the top barrel.

** if you plan to use steel shot, skeet in the bottom barrel, and IC in the top barrel.

It wouldn't hurt to pattern your shotgun as well. This will help you figure out what choke and load combination works best for your intended use.

I would personally state it a bit more assertively: pattern your darn shotgun! You just spent ~$2k on a shotgun, now go grab a box of shells and some butcher paper to find out how it's "tuned."

As California transitions from lead to steel for hunting, patterning becomes key to finding out how the shot will act differently (and it will).

Or you can just go shoot at birds on opening day and wonder why they seem bulletproof.

The reason why members are encouraging you to pattern your shotgun is to know exactly how the shot you are sending down range is behaving as a result of your equipment and as a function of the ammo you are using.

I will pattern a 250 dollar 870 or a 2000 dollar over under to know exactly what my shot is doing. You may find that a Mod choke is what is recommended, but using a specific weight and volume of shot may have better results using another choke.

If you do not pattern the shotgun at the likely distance you will hunt game or break clays, you will have trouble diagnosing your misses as a function of poor shot placement or poor pattern.

You would think that every shell and choke combination will produce an even spread of shot, but it is very common to have shot concentrated in one location of your pattern leaving you with fewer shot eleswhere in your pattern. This can cause a miss and lead to frustration.

Check out some patterning videos on youtube and they will guide you to the results you are comfortable with.

                    ><

My advise is to get out to a Sporting Clays field or a Skeet field and practice. Practice incoming, outgoing, overhead and crossing targets. Those are the shots you will be shooting on a dove hunt

Put in IC/ mod or Skeet/IC chokes and pratice....if your are not hitting clays, you won't be hitting doves regurdless of chokes, patterns, gun.....ect.

Modified works for me but I will also use full for those high fliers in the second season.

O/U I like mod in both I know it's not the norm or I use mod first barrel full second. I like a tighter pattern for the second shot most second shots are further out.

Last year before dove season i patterned my shotgun. It was eye opening. I shot 4 different loads to determine what was gong to be the best pattern. I brought 100 rounds of each to the range. Once I picked my load, I shot clays with it for the remainder of the day

it is Dove hunting, put mod on the bottom and full on top and go hunt. Try not to over think it to much and just have fun.

Until you pattern your shotgun everything will be guesswork.
