    Chokes question

    Just bought a 686 Silver Pigeon 28" 12gauge.

What chokes should I use for dove hunting? The ones that came inserted or should I change them out with the 3 others that came in the box? I'm clueless.

    Thanks in advance.

It will depend on how far you will be taking your shots. Taking shots at 15-25 yards will require a different choke than if you are going to be shooting at 40 yard crossers.

It all depends on the distance you will be taking the majority of your shots.

20-30 yard crossers was most common last year.

You'll need to know what chokes you have first.

Second, in general you'll probably want mod or improved mod for longer shots and IC for shorter range stuff (which depends on where/how you hunt).

You'll want looser chokes for steel shot than for lead shot to acheive the same pattern at distance.

When in doubt shoot mod with lead or IC with steel.

From what I'm reading and hearing, modified is what I need. Now how do I know which are the mods in what they provided me?

                CIMF= Cylinder - Improved Cylinder - Modified - Full

Cylinder is the most open pattern full is the tightest pattern.

The chokes you have should say what they are- C, IC, M, F. Or be desgnated by dashes or slot cuts in the top of the choke.

Opening day, I like to shoot an Improved Cylinder, after that I switch to Modified, since the birds are more weary.

But chokes are portable and easy to change out, in other words be adaptive and use what the conditions predict.

Some good info mentioned regarding steel shot, mentioned by NapalmCheese.

Also try patterning your gun. Same loads you will be using in the field, try different chokes and distances. Find out what gives your gun the best pattern at the right distance.

Just noticed you're using an Over/Under. Which gives you two choices. First barrel maybe IC second barrel Mod. Larger pattern for close shots and a tighter pattern when you miss. Doves are fast! Usually.

If you have skeet use that for most shots, or Improved Cylinder as stated previously. Put a modified into your second barrel due to normally longer shots after you've missed the first shot behind the bird....

I use IC for dove, and it works for me.

                            This ^

2 notches for improved cylinder and 3 notches for modified?
