    Benelli M4 - Trijicon RMR

Has anyone here tried out an RMR on a Benelli M4? I am about to purchase one, but with some many different choices and mounting options, I wanted to see if anyone else has any thoughts. I'd prefer the dual-illuminated version, because I hate power buttons and batteries, but I could be convinced to go with the LED type if they're significantly better for my needs somehow. Also, does anyone know if co-witnessing with the standard ghost-rings is possible?

So far, this is what I'm leaning towards:

The RMR 7 MOA (Dual-illuminated, amber dot):

And this Scalarworks top rail/RMR mount ($119):

Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

It may be too small. I see those on pistols typically.

Not sure about that, technically they were designed for M16's (mounted to an ACOG, for CQB use), and people just use them on pistols a lot because they happen to be small and durable. On an M16, it would be roughly the same sight picture as on a Benelli m4. On a pistol, the sight is at arm's length and people don't seem to mind

Keep it small & light, shotguns seem to find the weaknesses of large, heavy optics! (Recoils them right off!)

By brother-in-law has a RMR mounted to his M4 with a Mesa Tactical side saddle.

          Yes...

If you are anything like me, I’m sure that you have found yourself in your friend’s basement discussing the finer points of co-witnessing back up iron sights on platforms other than the AR-15.One of these platforms that came up was the Benelli M4, and many laughs ensued as we put all of the optics that we could find onto the factory rail.

Third, and most importantly, the RMR mounts directly to the Scalarworks mount with the included hardware. This gets the RMR lower on the shotgun, which actually provides for co-witness with the factory Benelli iron sights.
          Regards,
          Mike

The RMR will be replacing my current cheapo Truglo red dot sight:

That sight actually isn't that bad, despite being cheap, it's served my well. My biggest complaint is that it sits so high, I can't get a good cheek weld.

I'll be sad to lose my sidesaddle shell carrier when I replace the rail, but it's a price I'm will to pay to bring the sight lower.

I have that sidesaddle, too, but unfortunately I'll have to lose it if I go with the Scalarworks mount

A red dot, in general, for me is for fast followup shots. The RMR, in specific, is because my TruGlo doesn't work as well as I'd like. Additionally, this is my primary HD weapon - a tritium sight is ideal. No switches or buttons or batteries to fuss with, no sight alignment required. Shoulder weapon, put red dot where you need to place 9 holes, squeeze trigger, repeat as needed.

That's the beauty of the M4 - there is absolutely nothing else you need to do: just aim, and squeeze the trigger as many times as it takes for the threat to stop. A red dot takes that already-fast-as-hell procedure and makes it even-faster-as-heller

Obviously, I've never put it to use in an actual HD situation, but a red dot makes aiming easily 2x as fast at the range. Co-witnessed ghost-ring sights is an added bonus.

I use a T1 on my work Benelli. As much as it gets banged around, it's bombproof.

Also, an update: I just ordered the items I listed in the OP. RMR arrives tomorrow, rail should arrive next week, I'll post an update once I give it a try!

Plus, I figured even if I don't like it, I'll buy an ACOG mount and put it on my AR's ACOG. And if I don't like that, I'll put it on my HD pistol. I'm sure I'll use it for at least one of those things - I just hope I don't like it so much that I can't resist buying 2 more

I considered one of those as well, and still might if the RMR doesn't work out. I'm hoping the RMR concept works because I want to reduce the height-over-bore as much as possible, I just can't get a good cheek-weld with tall sights using my c-stock (pinned in the middle position), and I don't want to change stocks.

Never found any sight better then no sight on a shotgun to 50-60 yards. What I find most important is first shot on target ....and done very quickly, gun to shoulder and shot fired in 1.25 sec or less. Never found a sight that does that better than good fundamentals

I don't disagree with that all, which is one of the reasons I wanted to be able to co-witness with the factory sights, and if need be I can always peak over the sights and not use either one.

One thing I forgot to add is that I also use this as a slug gun out to 100 yards. I've always been able to shoot about 5" groups @ 100 yards with my TruGlo sight (I realize that's considered terrible shooting in "calguns land", but for me with an 18" 12ga shooting offhand, that's pretty good). With ghost rings I pretty much only kept my slugs on paper about half the time.

You may want to try your question over on the Benelli forum. You may get more responses.

Remember that the rail is the weak link on the m4. If you're going to be running any type of nice/expensive optic, you'll want to replace the factory rail with an "in spec" one.
