I'll take the other side of the argument. I just started shooting a few months ago. Most of the guys I shoot with have been doing it for 20+ years (maybe 40 years for a few).

After watching a few games, I jumped right in and started shooting. There is a definite "cadence" involved with these guys. If you aren't into shooting at their pace and "cadence", they would probably suggest that you shoot with different people.

One of the guys in the crowd shoots very "hot" reloads. They are way louder than the factory shells. He has been asked to tone it down. No insults, just a request.

If others give you feedback along the lines of old crabby, then by all means I would find another venue. On the other hand, you may find that old crabby is a known jerk that everyone else ignores as well. You may even make a few more friends along the way.

I certainly would want to know it was more than one old crabby, before I quit.
Thanks for the advice, normally it would've been easy to do except that wife and I can only get to Metcalf pretty late, so most of the squads would've already finished their round by the time we get there.

There's also the issue that the old crabby (hah! I like this term....) is the organizer with the final say on the league and who assigns members to squads, this would force me into yet another confrontation with him which I don't think is worth it.

There are other places wife and I can go shoot at so no worries.

Maybe you should have given him advice to slow down if he wants to improve his scores.

I have had a person leave the line since I was not shooting on his cadence. He never picked on me. He just decided not to shoot with the squad that I was shooting in.

Seems fair to me. If he does not like the squad then he should find another.
I should be given the chance to shoot also and if I do not shoot to his standard. He can leave.

Disturb the cadence? He can't predict the angle of the clay? Let him tell the good Lord that when the wind blows. How is he predicting the angle of the clay then? Sounds like this guy two weeks ago who was complaining about someone who was "messing up the rhythm" because he was shooting too slow. This guy shoots with a lit cigar that stinks and no one says anything. Each shooter gets like 8 secs to shoot ( forgot the real number) so what's the problem. The range I go to has these guys who like to speed shoot and I gotta stop myself sometimes and remember to shoot at my own pace. One boy was getting mad at himself and was dropping them like hotcakes. Had he slowed down he would have hit some but he and his friend were trying to shoot like they stole the shotguns. Then he was up there getting mad when he missed.

You and your wife sound like you shoot like I do. take my time. I am not terribly slow but I am not gunslinger. I've watched enough competitive trap videos (international mostly) and they don't all shoot fast. They take their time, focus and squeeze the trigger. I don't think there is noting wrong with you are doing and I do think this is why trap is dying and why it's not big here in So Cal. Nothing but a bunch of s***t talking crotchety old men who act like spoiled brats.

Hey, it's all about having fun. At my club safety and fun are paramount. Welcome new shooters young and old. Take your time and enjoy the sport. If the others don't like it they can always go to a different trap. And I'm over 70..Not all of us are old cratchty old men.

I think we'll try sporting clay and skeet and see which game we'll like to focus on next after she has first 25 in trap.
Don't let people get you down or change your mind about something you are passionate about. I have shot most clay disciplines and no matter what event you are shooting, there will always be "that guy" that wants to ***** about something. Asshats are everywhere! If a member of the squad has an issue, let them squad with someone else. It is THEIR issue, not yours. I have walked off the line and re-squaded during a shoot due to safety issues. No harm, no foul. I just didn't like the fact the guy two posts down from me shot the house with his release trigger. I am not going to tolerate a safety issue with someone who does not know how to competently use their own equipment.

For those trap haters out there, 25 is a great score but what really matters is when you run 75 or 100 straight from both 16 yard AND handicap. Don't forget doubles as well. Do that in a tournament and tell everyone here how "easy" that is. Can trap get monotonous? Absolutely! However, it does take focus, determination and skill to get to that level.

While I do find sporting clays to be more entertaining, the cost of shooting sporting is so much more than trap. $35 to $40 for one round (100 targets) of sporting when I can shoot trap for $6.00 a round max (25 targets which would equal $24 to compare against a round of sporting). Heck, shoot a sporting clays tournament and you are looking at over $200 for just the main event (100 to 200 targets) while a trap tournament is less than that for 5 events (500 targets).

Don't give up Big Bear, there are plenty of clay disciplines that will leave your wallet empty. Enjoy them all!!

A Remington 1100 isn't so bad. I was at Triple-B with a guy on my left shooting a I-Don't-Know-What that kept ejecting hulls and hitting me in the head. I think he was getting ready for dove season and probably was shooting a illegal for trap load. They were coming so hard that some hit the K gun that the guy to my right was shooting. It cost about 8 times the price of my Citori. Fortunately, the guy with the K gun wasn't shooting his expensive gun.

On Wednesday evening Metcalf is still your only real choice TMK. You can still shoot as "general public". The range has to keep a field available for "general public".

Sporting Clays is certainly fun. But it is more money and I'd have to give up weekend days for a couple hourse of shooting. I can't do that with any routine. That's why I shoot skeet league and occassional sporting.

Like I said, I'd prolly make messing with ths guy's head the highlight, but I'm just a dick that way sometimes. .

Took my 12 year old nephew out a few weeks ago to Coon Creek for a lesson. Talking with the instructor, he said High School trap teams and competition has really taken off and growing in the greater Sacramento region.
