Cheap 12 ga shells?

Now that I am shooting a few hundred rounds a month I was wondering if there is any secret place to get inexpensive 12 ga shells.

I normally buy whatever is cheap at WalMart but is there any other option (without having to buy a pallet full)?

Not sure about your area and I know you said you do walmart. But walmarts in northern orange county sell 12 ga 1-1 1/8 oz #7.5, 8, 9 at $5.40 for a 25 count box. I bought 40 boxes last weekend. I can find cheaper online (ammo depot, etc.) but the shipping is almost $100 so it washes all the savings and becomes more expensive.

I am interested if there is a non-walmart alternative too. I am doubtful but I hate waiting 45 minutes for a goon to come over with a key and another 30 minutes for someone with an ammo license to cash me out!

Cabelas just had a sale on Estates for $5 a box shipped if you bought 20 boxes or more.

It is kinda weird how they work. In Oceanside, the shotgun shells are on the shelf. You can grab them in your cart and buy them at the front registers. Most of the other WalMarts have the shells in a cage and you need to get "the guy with the key" to buy them at his register near the camping supplies.

Out here in the IE, shotgun shells are free to grab on the shelf, anything else is all locked up in the cage.
Nice thing is that the camping checkout register is the same aisle, so little to no walking!

Both wife and I shoot trap 2 to 3 times a week and we're in a similar situation, going through around 300 rounds a week between us now.

What I recommend, is a "buy them cheap and stack them deep" strategy to keep yourself stocked up. Like you, I don't want to buy an entire pallet, I don't have the space to stash them. In addition to the occasional trip to Walmart, I buy from these online vendors:

1. Cabelas. Wait for them to have a free shipping deal and for shells that cost $59.99 or lower a case. I've found that this is one of the cheapest way to buy shells for me. The disadvantage is that you might run out of shells before their next free shipping deal and during which they discount a certain brand of shell with the load that you want. Another thing you can consider also is to sign up for their Cabelas credit card to get some money back.

2. Ammo Supply Warehouse. Though they don't have free shipping, their lower cost per case usually mean you end up with similar cost to Cabelas. One plus point for this vendor is that they ship from Nevada and arrives much quicker than Cabelas. On the downside, their selection of brands isn't as comprehensive but they always have what I wanted.

3. Target Sport USA. They don't usually have birdshots or have them at good price but their buckshots and slugs are pretty fairly priced when they're on sale. Free shipping if you buy an entire case.

Target Sports USA has some good deals of flight control buckshot if you have some patience.

You could always start reloading them. I think it dropped the price down to like $3 a box. I also asked the range where I shot if I could pick up the hulls that other people left laying, so that helped me build up my stock.

Most people can't achieve $3 a box these days without having some special situation. Shot alone runs about $40 for a 25 lb (400 ounce) bag. If you are loading 1 ounce loads, you are already at 10 cents/shell or $2.50 a box with no other costs. Obviously, if you are loading 1 1/8 ounce loads, the price will be higher.

Consistently good prices for 1oz #8 for cheaper and faster shipping than most other places. I try to buy 2k at a time.

If you like watching for sales, you can also try Midway USA. I've seen them sell Winchester AA for $55-60 per flat. You can probably sell the hulls for a decent penny if you don't reload.
