    Mossberg 500 Combo's

So I am buying a Mossberg combo with the 18" and 28" barrel.

Is it worth spending the extra $100 to get removable chokes on the 28" barrel ? The $330 combo is black and a fixed Medium choke, the $420 combo is camo paint and comes with 3 removable chokes.

My plan for the gun is HD with the short barrel and some trap with the longer barrel, the long term plan is to get a proper over/under for trap within the next year or 2. So maybe the fixed choke is not that big a thing. I might even have to try some hunting with the thing but currently that is not my plan. I am not a fan of the camo look but I am fan of options and it seems the removable chokes gives me more options.

For an all purpose rig I'd spend the extra for the chokes. Having additional chokes is almost as good as having different barrels. Even if you buy a O/U latter you can use your Mossberg as a loaner. If HD is you main goal look into buying a 500/590 with the extended mag tube instead and just buy a O/U for range/hunting work. Since the biggest short fall of any shotgun is the limited amount of rounds that can be carried. Also showing up to the range with a 28" barrel, side saddle, a light, 12" LOP stock and MagPul furniture trying to bust clays looks a little funny

      mikeyr,
You can buy extra choke's from "www. Phillips Wholesale" for $13.00 a piece.
I know, 'cause I just called about them. [626] 331-3022. Ask for Rick.

I knew I could buy extra chokes but I had not looked where, thanks.

however the question was because the cheaper combo has non-removable chokes, its a fixed medium and non-removable so you are stuck with it.

At this point, wifey says spend the extra...

You should be able to get the combo w/ chokes and w/o camo...a bit cheaper than w/ camo. Last I knew, Mossberg doesn't even catalogue the fixed choke combo. That's a Big 5 concoction.

I'm a big fan of chokes. Greatest shotun invention in 50 years. That said a modified is about perfect for trap.

I have that exact combo with the fixed mod choke. I shoot weekly trap with it and hunt pheasant with it. I have never personally felt at a disadvantage with the fixed choke. I hit about 20 out of 25. I would save your money and just go with the fixed mod. I probably have about 7,000 rounds through the shotgun at this point.

For trap and pheasant, modified is a pretty good choke. For some other games/quarry, not so much. Steel shot (coming to a town near you) will perhaps pattern tighter than desired.

Don't forget the future California mandated none toxic ammo requirement for hunting. Having different choke tube options seems will likely allow for different ammo option such a steel, rather than the very expensive other none toxic options. I think I would spend the additional money for the choke tubes.

I have the 8 round 18 inch cylinder bore version which is my primary home defense gun. I bought a Maverick vent rib 28 inch barrel with chokes, for birds and bunnies. I bought a rifled slug barrel for anything that walks the planet. This a 10/22 and a 357 revolver are the most useful firearms I own.

If the goal is to have a true barrel swap combo with an 18" security barrel and a 28" barrel with removable chokes, then...

Buy the "All Purpose" that comes with a 28" barrel with removable chokes, then buy an 18" barrel for $100.

                      or

Buy the "Combo" that comes with an 18" barrel and almost useless 28" fixed choke barrel, then buy a 28" removable choke barrel for $200.

Chokes are what make a true shotgun.

I guess my mossberg 500 combo is useless cause of the fixed chokes

You gain quite a bit of flexibility with removable chokes.
You can shoot both trap and skeet with a fixed modified choke, but it's a compromise.
You'll probably shoot better using the Full choke for trap and the IC choke for skeet.
Down the road, should you decide to sell the gun, it might be easier to sell with removable chokes.

Picked up a used Mossberg 500 combo with 18" and fixed 28" for dirt cheap when I lived in Stockton. I barely use the 28" barrel and didn't justify spending extra for the combo with removable chokes. I think it ultimately comes down to how often you plan to shoot shotgun and for what discipline.

For anyone getting into firearms and looking for a shotgun, the combo deal (regardless with or without chokes) is a solid buy imo.
