is this your first gun purchase? The reason I ask, is why did you choose the Mav 88?

I was recently researching, for my first purchase, and decided to go with the Mossberg 500 Silver Combo from Big 5. It is a beast of a gun.... I have heard the Mav 88 is better if you want to do a pistol grip on it, due to where the safety is, but I really like my 500.... I picked it up last week. It is my first time owning a gun, But I was in the military and carried an M16 for about 16 months total. Also had familiarity with an M9.

Make sure to get a case, cleaning supplies, and some snap caps.

Oh, one more thing. There are no stupid questions when it comes to guns. I remember being a teenager and hanging around gun shops desperate to get any knowledge I could, this was in the 70's, pre internet. I never did get a straight answer and those armchair commandos acted bored, indifferent, and irritated. Everybody thinks some answers are obvious, but they are not to everyone and that's ok. We have to all help each other out.

Your grip should naturally keep your fingers away from the button as you're shooting. I found I always have to make a concerted effort to engage the release button. Shouldnt be a problem.

Jimbo, this is my third gun but first shotgun. I have the other stuff but no 12ga snap caps yet.

I went with the 88 because it was under 250 out the door after tax and dros. And from what I've read, they're every bit as good as the 500.

Also the 88 is in jail until the 25th, but Ill probably pick it up the 28th when I get back from my weekend trip. Then it's time for reading and practicing stuff with snap caps.

Yes on the safety. It creates a tactile index and also proveides the quickest smothest transition from a low/high ready to getting your target lined up.
