    I'd suggest 1100 in 28 and/or 410..

In fact, I know where you can get a 28 ga 1100 sporting for $1000 not including tax/dros..

Otherwise I'd look for a used Citori in 410.. they are out there and occasionally you can find a good deal..

I am a sporting clays shooter and do a lot of subgauge shooting. I started out collecting subgauge guns....had a Franchi 28, Citori 410 and Browning 20 ga. I found that over time, changing from gun-to-gun was costing me birds. Ended up upgrading my competition gun and tubing my replaced 12 ga. Best thing I ever did. BUT. The investment was steep.

On balance, my suggestion is to do like I did, collect guns, see how serious you are gonna get about it and then finally tube.

Am open to selling my Franchi 28 ga and Citori 410 o/u.

I ended up with a near new Citori and MEC 9000....

ScottB - hope you don't hunt with those guys that got tickets for not having their magazine tubes plugged

Dead Pair - you can list them in the long gun marketplace. If selling you must include a price that you will accept. Include any pertinent details (barrel length, choke tubes/wrench included (or if they are fixed chokes), flaws, etc.). Also, don't forget to post plenty of pictures.

I use a Browning 725 sporting 32" barrels for sub gauge sporting and to mess around with skeet with very good results. New sporting models go for about $2600, field grade about $1900.

I am a hog for .410s in just about any configuration. Have a Browning Feather XS Sporting with 30" barrels that is my absolute favorite for anything I can shoot with a .410. Also have a Winchester 101, AOC/SG Ugartechea, Remington 1100, a couple of Winchester Model 42s, and an artisanal Spanish SxS. Used to have a Citori Field with 28" barrels, sold it to get the Feather XS. For pure .410 fun, it's hard to beat a Model 42 (or the Browning repro), but if I could only keep one it would be the Feather XS. Used ones are just within your budget.

Someone mentioned 28 ga as an alternative. A better alternative would be a Ruger Red Label 28 ga with 28" barrels and a set of their factory .410 tubes (made for Ruger by Briley). Hard to find but definitely worth the trouble. The Red Label 28 is just about the nicest shooting 28 field gun out there.
