Wing you might not like the term sissy but it is true. I've seen women of small stature shoot guns that bigger stronger women didn't like it was all in the attitude.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

This one, with a Knoxx Spec-Ops stock in 12 gauge.

I would go with a 870 police from Vangcomp. They are back bored and ported which greatly helps with recoil. I've shot 3" mag slugs from mine and my arm didn't fall off! Seriously, it is a very nice set up... more accurate than stock also.

My wife has a mossy 500 with a knoxx spec ops stock and a knoxx sidewinder detachable box magazine kit. She loves it.

I bought her mother a mossy 500 in 20 guage. Nothing extra except I had the barrel lopped down to 19 inches. She loves it and is wicked accurate with it.

My recomendation. Have him take her to the gunshop and heft a few different guns. Let her "try them on" for size, features and weight. Advise them not to necessarily take the advice of the gun counter guy. Sometimes they are tools and have no idea what they are talking about.

Depends on her size and experience. If she knows a lot about them and is careful she can rock a 12 gauge. If she's new, then maybe a 20. But I'd recommend shooting both (rental) before going out to buy one, at least that way she can get a feel for what she'd be comfortable with. I don't know if ranges have different gauge shotguns though. Good luck!

P.S. Get a recoil pad for the 12 gauge for sure. Especially if she's using buckshot or slugs but I think birdshot would be good enough for HD. It won't damage too many things but I'm pretty sure it'll stop someone unless they're on crack.
