So, your were smart enough to take an 870 and build a Defense shotgun out of it instead of sending some clown like me a bunch of money for one of my custom builds. Good move as you will value something you built more then something you bought. Turns out it was an old Wingmaster but heck, you were even smart enough to upgrade it with the flex tab conversion or at least you better had. But I bet there is a part you forgot.

Look at the picture in this post. You are looking at two firing pin retractor springs. The bottom one is the old one and it is subject to breakage and most likely at the worst time. As you can see the coils are the same for the entire length of the spring.

Now look at the top one. That is the modern spring and you will notice the coils come together in the center of the spring. Since the old ones were breaking in the center the tech guys at Remington came up with this solution. By changing the distance in the coils in the center of the spring that adds strength to the spring in the exact area the old spring was failing. Don't ask me how just accept that it does.

The old one can break and still work at first but eventually eventually you begin to get failures.

The part is #F9350 and retails on the Remington parts list for $4.95. So if you forgot to upgrade that part call 800-243-9700, follow the prompts to parts and get one. Since there is a flat rate shipping grab some magazine springs or other small parts you may need one day at the same time.

Not sure when the spring changed but I will guess late 80's to early '90's. If anyone knows for sure it would be great if they would post in so we all learn something.

Do all early 870's suffer from this? I mean I have a 12 ga and a 410 bore, both around 1974 vintage. So I would need to replace both I'm guessing, correct?

I'm also guessing that the part number is probably the same because the firing pin extractor is probably the same?

Revo - Yes, to the early models you have. And yes, same spring is in all the models and many Remington Rifles also.

I stopped caring what people think 40 years ago. People come to me for the knowledge, skill, quality and the fact I stand by my work. That is good enough for me.

Im not sure if its new info or not but just to be safe i checked my early 90's 11/87 and it has the newer style spring. I cant remember off the top of my head what year it is though, i wanna say '93? Ill check next time im in the safe.
