Range Day

So today I went with some other Calgunners to Triple Bs and spent some time at the skeet range.

It turns out that those SoCal clinics pay off, a lot.

There were quite a few stations I hadn't shot before, but by sticking to the fundamentals and having a plan, I managed to break about 80% of the birds launched for me.

We had the field to ourselves for most of the day, and so we got some practice in on the stations we were familiar with. Then another shooter joined us, and we went (mostly) through a regular course of fire. Aside from station 8, which was just too different, the fundamentals from the easy stations carried right over to the ones I was unfamiliar with.

The others I was with were trying out different guns, and I had a chance to try them as well. I found the Beretta and Browning okay, but quite liked the Caeser Guerinis. (Though I still shot better with my comfortable to me CZ).

Thanks to the people who went out with me, and thanks to Don & Captain Dick for giving the skills and confidence to enjoy today.

Both OCGunner & EatsEverything had a really hard time missing anything with the longer and higher ribbed (trap style?) Caesar Guerini. I liked the shorter one with normal rib, mainly because it matched the setup I was used to shooting.

sorry you couldn't make it, but I'm glad your poopgeyser got taken care of. We decided we would probably do this again sometime soonish, because fun.

It's always good to get out there with fellow clinic attendees, glad you all had a good time!

The gentleman who joined us was wearing a Sansei shirt under his vest. Not sure if you saw that. My guess is he's one of the regular Sansei competitors. He was hanging out with the group of guys that usually have the lawn chairs out under the tree by Field 10 when we do clinics. Super nice bunch of guys.

Actually going through a whole game of skeet was a real trip, especially on the stations we'd never done before, or even the ones we had seen, shooting doubles and high houses. Even Station 8 was a great laugh. I had a lot of fun despite the fact I was hurting by then.

We tried out a Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon I Sporting and a Browning Citori 725 Sporting for the first round. The second round we tried the "fancy guns that are just going to make us wish we had a higher budget," a Caesar Guerini Sporting 30" and a Caesar Guerini Ascent 32" (the one with the higher rib and the Monte Carlo stock).

We dubbed the Summit Ascent the "magic gun" as we seemed to be hitting everything with it... until we actually started playing the game and found that maybe something a little lighter would be beneficial for doubles or Stations 3-5.

We're trying to get to a point where we won't embarrass ourselves first. If sporting clays is anything like those middle stations...

What me and my buddies refer to as the "tree people". If you go there long enough you'll notice that they shoot maybe 10% of the time. Mostly just hanging out smoking a cigar and reading the newspaper.

And they take up a bunch of shady parking spots!!! Thankfully we're getting to a part of the year where my backside won't burst into flames when getting into my car after a clinic.

I agree, we should head over and try out sporting clays. I've done it elsewhere and the variety of targets is a lot of fun.
