pre exposure rabies vaccination does exist and many animal handlers, veterinarians, get them, titers should be taken every few years to checkimmunity levels. I got my first one when in vet school and have continued to take them every 5 years or so.
I am surprised at necropsy they were able to determine the dogs condition yet were not able to get a sample from the brainstem to get a decent direct flourescent antibody test. I would not have gotten the post exposure vaccines, even living in your area.
next time you have to shoot a mammal that is suspected to have rabies go for a lower spine or heart/lung shot. a shot between the eyes leave sufficient material for testing if the brain stem is also intact

20-30 shots though? I've gone thru the vaccine protocol(picked up a stupid bat with rabies while at work)...legend had it that the shots were going to be plentiful and painful but when I went it was 4 shots to the legs x 2 sessions(IIRC because of my weight).

dont know if this was axed or not but how did the rott attack? what signs were there that he was getting agressive?

The experience with the police was wonderful. They were very professional, once they arrived I told the immediate that the shotgun was clear and in the house I also told them I shot two rounds and pointed in the direction I dispatched the rounds, so that they knew I had nothing in the crossfire that was anyone's property. I asked the office what were my repercussions and he said none, you did every thing in a safe manor to protect your family. He didn't ask to see the fire arm or anything.

Sorry you had to go through all this. And it's good to hear that the police were on your side and not making a big deal about the shooting. You had no choice and did the best you could.
