I was confused by this as well. Current protocol for rabies exposure is a series of 5 shots over the course of two weeks, all in the arm, which replaces the old system of dozens of shots in the abdomen. Four rounds of 20-30 shots to the wound site is something I haven't heard of in the United States and is definitely not standard treatment according to the CDC. Current rabies exposure treatment is well known to be painless so I am not sure what was going on in this case.Comment

That's a tough one to handle...thanks for being here and sharing.
"Diagnosis in animals
A diagnosis of rabies can be made after detection of rabies virus from any part of the affected brain, but in order to rule out rabies, the test must include tissue from at least two locations in the brain, preferably the brain stem and cerebellum.
The test requires that the animal be euthanized. The test itself takes about 2 hours, but it takes time to remove the brain samples from an animal suspected of having rabies and to ship these samples to a state public health or veterinary diagnostic laboratory for diagnosis."If I ever stop laughing, I'm dead.

Never been a fan of Rottweilers or Pitbulls or any other attack dogs. Everyone chooses the bred of dog they prefer. However, I chose German Shorthair specifically because the aggression is bred out of them. They make awesome pets, are very family loyal. They will bark and warn you of danger but that's all you can count on them to do. From my perspective, that's all I want from a dog is to warn me. I will decide how to deal with the situation. I had my dog for 15 years and recently lost him. It is a very painful thing to go through. For me and my kids, he was just one of my kids and he was treated as such. I'm sure you chose a Rottweiler for good reasons. That's your business not mine. For me, I chose not to have a dog in the house that can rip your throat out or harm and even kill your family. Don't get me wrong, I am a serious dog lover. But for me, in my house, I chose a dog that will warn me of danger but can not be a danger. Sorry your loss, and for your personal physical and mental pain.Comment

Gdt82 and Steve in 29 the reason for the amount of shots is they have to inject the wound site 360 degrees around for my size of injury ( 2-6" long gashes) it took 15 shots on each wound with the vaccine to accomplish. It's a total of 4 sessions it goes from day 0 3 7 and 14. I'm doing the shots because we life in the Santa cruz mountains you never know what could have bit him so just as a precaution we are taking the shots even tho he is current on his shots. If a human gets rabies and isn't treated until signs of rabies are present the case is always death. Yes rabies is rare our hospital out here hasn't seen anyone have to be treated for rabies in 15 years so this was all new to them. The shots on day 0 are around the wound, then the other 3 sessions are in the arms just had my second session today one shot in each arm.
Codygt47 during the attack he got my leg and my arm."60 million gun owners didn't kill anybody today".
The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

Never heard of rabies vaccination for humans doubt it exists.Comment

The original rabies vaccine was actually the first vaccine ever used on humans in 1885. Invented by Louis Pasteur. Rabies in humans is very rare in the U.S., but in 3rd world countries about 60,000 people a year die from rabies. Almost all from feral dog attacks. The vaccine when available is 100 percent effective when given within days after the bite, but due to high costs is not available throughout much of the world.Comment

It does exist, I've had one. I don't know if I still have immunity or not.
I'm sorry about your dog. I had to put one down for aggression once myself (a German Shorthair) but fortunately before he actually connected. Their heads are harder than you'd think. It's tough.Comment
