That is so horrible. Sad to hear you have to do that to a your friend and companion.

Damn that is crazy! Hope you both heal up fine!

Just goes to show, bird shot, IS FOR BIRDS!

Nothing towards you, I'm sure you grabbed the first available weapon and ammo and still managed to put the threat down.

The experience with the police was wonderful. They were very professional, once they arrived I told the immediate that the shotgun was clear and in the house I also told them I shot two rounds and pointed in the direction I dispatched the rounds, so that they knew I had nothing in the crossfire that was anyone's property. I asked the office what were my repercussions and he said none, you did every thing in a safe manor to protect your family. He didn't ask to see the fire arm or anything.

This wasn't Cecil the lion, this was an aggressive animal that posed a threat of bodily injury to the OP who by all accounts did exactly what he was forced to do.

On another note, I had to shoot an attacking pit bull and believe me when a dog goes into attack mode, they are hard to stop. The pit bull I shot took a .45 round to the head and before I recovered from the recoil, he took off. He was found later, alive... The bullet barely missed the orbital socket, exited the jaw and lodged in the chest. If you have to shoot anything once, twice is better!

Scarry stuff OP, to us dogs are human like and family and we get way too comfortable with them. Certain breeds have to be watched carfully for signs, I am by far from an expert but have had to put 2 dogs down for similar problems.

The last one was a pit that my son brought home because they were going to put it down as a pup (should of been a first clue).

Xmas eve a few years ago he got into a fight over a bone we gave both dogs and went crazy, locked its jaws on our boxers neck and was going to kill it.

I hit it as hard as I could with a 1 1/2" stick we kept in the back door and it didnt even phase it, had I had a gun on me I would of shot it but couldt walk away long enough to go get one.

I finally pulled him off by grabbing hind legs, this wasnt the first problem with this dog so we had him out down ( he bit me once it the arm)

I own a 110lb Rottweiler and he is a nice sweet loyal dog that would never hurt or be aggressive to anyone he knows. But around the mail man he goes nuts, breaking out fence boards lunges when on walks.... No matter what he always wants to attack the mail man. I have always worried about what would happen if he got out..... Not to badmouth the bread but have there issues. Their is a reason insurance companies won't insure them... A small percentage of them are dangerous dogs and unlike a small dog they can be deadly. You did what you had to do. As a Rottweiler owner I feel I have a great responsibility to raise and keep him right and mine is still dangerous. I have always worried about getting sued or my dog getting shot.

Should have been the only incident. I put one of my dogs down when he bit me while I was disciplining him. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to let a dog that will bite his owner live.

I am NOT talking about one that bites blindly when in pain from a wound or something like pulling out porcupine quills.

Sorry, OP. Had to take my Malamute to the pound and put him down. He was growling at the babies, and at me. The Humane Society said he was no good as a pet and refused to take him. I still cried like a baby.

Sorry to hear you had to do that.

That's pretty scary especially for someone that has kids.

Your dog just goes into beast-mode at a moments notice? Dang.
