Looking to get a shotgun at the 400$ mark, the three I'm looking at are the maverick 88, mossberg m500 or remington 870 express tactical. Looking for opinions on all three as home security and general plinker.

I'd go back about 3 to 4 pages on this forum and read forward...the question gets asked more than a little bit.
The answer boils down to "flip a coin". You might also find some folks who own some you can try.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those... Give each one a feel to see which you like better. And there's about a 99% chance that you know people who already own a 500 and an 870, so it shouldn't be hard to find those to try shooting. I don't own an 870, but it would be my personal choice if I was looking for a budget shotgun.Comment

Based on your budget, I think 9 out of 10 experienced shooters would recommend the Remington 870, not the tactical, but the regular 870 model. The tactical is too limiting while the regular 870 gives you options at the range, field and home. The Maverick is just plastic "junk" and the Mossberg, in my opinion, isn't close to the 870. The other option would be to look at the used market.Comment

If your goal is "home security and general plinker" I think the best deal is the Mossberg 500 12-Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun Combo they offer at Bass Pro, Big5 and other places for around $350.
Great shotgun. Includes 18.5" and 28" vent-rib barrels.
One shot deal and you are covered for all your shotgun needs.
I own a Rem 870 and Mossy 500. I love them both. I would trust my life on both. And the minute Remington 870 package that comes with a $350 includes 18.5" and 28" vent-rib barrels I will recommend those too.Comment

Id do the moss 500 combo $309$ big 5 ad this week.
Or at bass pro has the moss 500 with wood combo
Id do the combo for clays an home defense.
I like the rem 870 also but the wingmaster had so much love the other 870s seem second best.
kinda like the mossberg maverick 88. Anyway. Good luck and keep us posted.
THANKS FOR THE New Thread
