Assuming you are hiking in it would be hard to beat the Judge. You have shot for snakes and .45LC for bigger threats and you can carry it on your hip in a holster. If you are in a truck or ATV and long gun will so the need for a folder is not really there. Of course assuming you have a proper scabbard on the ATV.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Additionally...you can even cut down an H&R 1871 shotgun to 18-1/2" and still be legal with a full stock:

Yes, those are a 10ga single shot shotgun. Yes, they do kick a bit. I know someone who could cut & crown the barrel for you (plus install a bead sight):

        R&D Custom Barrel Service
        (562) 923-3608
        americhoke@gmail.com
Shotgun choke tubes, installation in 12 20 28ga .410 bore. Screw In Choke. Standarad and thin-wall systems, Barrel porting, gunfitting, recoil pad installation, lengthening, polishing long forcing cones, chamber and head spacing work. Custom gunfitting and refinishing. Pads and sights, Bob Day, Shotgun Modifications, R&D Custom Barrel, Americhoke

That'd be about the most compact and heaviest hitting shotgun I could imagine that's legal in CA (not counting the SERBU Super Shorty, Saiga 12 Tromix, or the AA-12).

The problem with the Judge, it is not legal in Commiefornia

Mossberg 500 with ATI pistol grip folding stock, pistol grip and heatshield. I am interested in VEPR 12.

Agree with the mossberg with a folding stock. That's exactly what I take with me camping. Fits easily in a duffle and no other campers have any clue what I have.
                Insert something clever here.

Little off topic, but I am curious - what on earth are you encountering in the wild that is giving you too many close calls?

From what I understood, they are legal. Not a sbs. AoW

Could be wrong. Just thought I remembered reading it was legal somewhere on the forum. So, whatever that's worth (ianal, do your own research, etc.)

I have a KSG, that thing is very compact and you have small profile with the shotgun shouldered.

That bites. If you ever move back to the United States in an area that has snakes then get one. I don't carry one in woods since Michigan has no snakes but born and raised and retired out of Florida I would have loved to have one as a camp gun. First round shot for wiggly threats and the next ones 45LC for big threats. I have been told that they have a disk type shot that will not figure 8 out the barrel but fly true and is a deadly defense round. Haven't heard from anyone that use it.

The OP did not say where he was but for anyone the old standard Survival Over and under is a good choice. Several combinations to pick from but I had one 40 years ago that was a .22 for the top barrel and .410 for the bottom. I think it was a Savage but old men forget stuff. Late a friend bought one that was .223 on top and 20ga on bottom.

Does anyone know of these still being made?

God, both the ksg and 870 marine are sexy but I'd say a ksg is a hell of a lot easier to aim and holds twice the ammo. Shooting in the dark or to scare a bear instead of having to kill it the ammo capacity of the ksg shines. I'd say with 99% of the critters in the woods a shot into the ground sends them running.

+1 for KSG. Put a laser/light combo, load birt shot in one tube and 00 buck in the other and you are GTG. Hand stop and extended tube selector will help a lot.
