    Help with Remington 870 Customization

    Hey guys

Just picked up my Remington 870 Synthetic 18' 7 shot tactical from Sports Authority today.

Im not new to shotgun customizations as far as Side Saddles and stocks are concerned however I was not sure if it was possible to get a +1 magazine extension installed that won't underpass the barrel? I wanted to send it into night hawk or wilson combat.

Also if anyone knows of a site thats selling the original Surefire forend for an 870 like the one pictured below that would be great.

Be sure to polish the chamber with 000 or 0000 steel wool. A simple process; wrap the steel wool around a short piece of dowel and chuck it into your electric hand drill. It will clean up all the little minor burrs from the manufacturing process.

Honestly, for this design I would stay away from mag extensions. Upgrade spring because it sucks. Also, get a better follower. If you extend this design you are going to rely on a wave lock washer to keep barrel cap from backing off during recoil. I don't recommend it. Spring keeper locks it down super tight with a good spring.

Do you plan on having barrel ported? If not I would recommend Magpul SGA Forend and with smallest piece of MOE railmounted at 9 o'clock if you are right handed, and get your self an Inforce WMLx

No other light comes close with those ergos and lockouts and features 500 Lumen constant on, momentary, strobe and stobe disable. Seriously.

If my barrel wasn't ported I would run it that way. WMLx is bomb proof and if you were getting barrel ported and ran it at 9 o'clock it would require maintenance because lend would foul. Nothing would happen to light.

Side saddle, VCS DSAC nothing compares. You can shoot all day and not lose a round even brass down.

I would recommend VCS Big Dome Safety or an S&J Hardware Oversized Safery. Both of this safeties allow you to engage safety with your index knuckle as you come off your index and into the trigger. No wasted movement.

I prefer this instead of having a safety you have to engage with the tip of your index finger, the move to trigger. Just some stuff to consider.

I will post some pics of my 870 Tactical wearing full Vang Comp Systems set up on my next post.

Here are some pics of my first set up. I purposely got this model so I could use my Bullpup Unlimited conversion kit. That is why I chose to go with Mesa Tactical's 6 shotshell w/picatinny rail to mount red dot. At that time I didn't want to drill and tap a sight set. I really loved my WMLx at 9 o'clock, it made the bead glow white when light was engaged.

I originally sent just my barrel to VCS and opted not to have it ported because I didn't want to lose my Bullpup compatibility.

Also, I knew that eventually I would commit to VCS front and rear ghost ring sight set. Then I would opt for ports. If you port barrel before you have new sight installed it's possible to botch the whole thing. I have seen barrels where this happened and ports touch front sight base. Looks bad.

I have Bullpup Conversion and Mesa Tactical 6 shotshell with rail available if interested.

I sent my barreled action and this is what I got back...

So above is how I set up my gun fresh back from VCS. Soon after I went to range and shot over 80 rounds of birdshot and 75 rounds of high brass 00BK. Zeroed sight and shot 35 slugs.

I was blown away by the DSAC. Shells didn't budge and screws stayed tight. Whoever designed DSAC is a genius. Seriously you got to try it.

While DSAC perfored beyond all expectations. I realized my light at 9 o'clock wasn't going to work....... WMLx proved how bomb proof it is. But lens fouled with carbon residue. So moved light to 6 oo'clock. I also put on my police magnum stock to see what how it handles. Looks good. I like it.

All I did to my 870 Express was to add a Magpul stock & fore end and Magpul receiver and barrel sling mounts. Instead of a screw on side plate shell holder, just stick a piece of 2" velcro on the side and use velcro shotgun shell cards. I also have a light that I can slide on the rail on top. That's it.
Honestly, velcro does give you options for shells on the side of the receiver for very little investment. However, DSAC is much better. If you don't mind spending the money.

DSAC uses an aluminum plate with steel inserts. The DSAC screws have notches to lock up like factory pins and have a shoulder that stops before making contact with side of receiver and it does not pinch receiver so won't bind the action. Does not require loctite. Once DSAC is installed, trigger has no play whatsoever.

I plan on upgrading my stock to a shorter length hogue mold. I do plan on adding Velcro to the side of frame for shell holders and I just ordered a surefire 618lm for end which I miraculously found )))). I do want to drill and tap my 870 in the future. Just not sure of my options just yet.

Talk to JD at AIP Tactical when and if you want to mod/upgrade your 870. He'll get you squared away with the right stuff and keep your shotgun from looking like a fishing lure.

i follow the KISS principle and keep it light; any addition should be worth it's weight.

Steel wool rusts in a heartbeat. No matter how much you clean up after it-you can never get all of the microscopic bits. Use bronze wool. It is the same as steel wool except that being bronze, it does not rust. It comes it many grades and can be purchased in most hardware stores. Another good choice is wet/dry emery cloth. It is found in the sandpaper section.
