    Security Shotgun

I'm thinking about buying a new pump shotgun strictly for home security.

This will be an extra fun/security gun. Any suggestions?

The Mossberg 500 with pistol grip seems popular but this gun does not seem nearly as nice as my Browning BPS. Any ideas?

For security purpose, all it's gotta do is go bang every time. Look and feel is second priority.

Moss 500 is reliable and affordable.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

Right, not worried about look and feel. I just want something that is very reliable, compact, and hopefully not too expensive. So I guess I meant I don't want a cheapie gun.

My boss has a Mossberg 590 8+1 20" barrel. It's freakin light as hell, and very reliable. My mossberg 500 started out pretty light, but after I put a sidesaddle, knoxx, and a new forend on it, it put on about 4-5 pounds.

Just make sure if you do get a Mossberg 500, get one with the actual slide action tube assembly, and not that integrated crap.

Mossberg 500 with 3" slugs...nothing is more fun to shoot at the end of a day at the range.

              Mossberg M590A1, its a mil-spec version of the 590.

3" slugs aren't good for home defense, too much chance of over penetration. I would recommend 2 3/4" #1 buckshot since it reliably penetrates around 12" into gelatin and also doesn't have a big chance of exiting the attackers body and going through a wall.

I was thinking for the "fun" part of owning the shotgun, shooting slugs. For home defense, using 3" slugs might create a big bloody mess on your hallway, you know what I mean?

interesting advice. you think 3" is overkill for defense?

Yes, you have to think about what going to happen if they travel through the body and a wall, remember you are responsible for what comes out of that barrel.

Bird shot wont stop a determined intruder. I've read news articles in the past about people getting shot point blank with bird shot being on their feet when the police arrived.

Mossberg 500 or 590, Remington 870 or a Benelli Nova. 00 buckshots is a proven choice.

+1 for an 870, i don't think i have had a problem at all with mine. The only time i have had a slight problem is i have short stroked it, maybe twice, and the shell doesn't eject all the way. Get a Wingmaster and modify it from there if you want a quality shotgun.
