I would rather spend $300 (at the time when they first came out) for the conversion

then possibly hundreds more for a complete 22lr ar 15
as I liked shooting the ar, but didnt like paying for 223 ammo

so for me I could shoot the platform I was comfortable with, without having to purchase a new weapon, 10 day wait and all that

and it takes no effort to slide out the bolt carrier to at least on the ar platform
and you can still keep the BB on use the magnet, or the screw in button for 22lr screw on buttons go for like $5

Now I did buy a dedicated 22lr 1911 only because converting a real 1911 was way more work, and not that much cheaper as I like to shoot 1911 style pistols

You are 100% correct. This has been discussed many times over the years and it is pretty simple that a receiver without an upper attached is not semi-auto, a "rifle", centerfire, etc.

When I used a conversion bolt, the controversial magnet was near by. When the .556 bolt was in, the magnet was much further away.

        Featureless is the best option.

I have also turned to this method instead of changing out the BB
Slapping an upper onto a lower is not "building" an AR-15.

Since the buffer and spring aren't necessary, I pulled mine out when using my conversion. Not sure it would help in a case with a LEO who had a slanted view of the law but in that case I doubt anything I would do could dis-way him from making any kind of false assumption.

I've since built up a dedicated .22 upper.

I personally wouldn't rock a 556 upper with no bb and a 22 conversion bolt... But my dedicated Ar-22 has no bb... But it's always mated to its upper

this state is too idiotic and anti-gun so I would NOT rock any AR type without a BB - its all up to the cop/leo you deal with, then the anti-gun CA D.A. to deal with

I dont want to be the test case for CA
                  I mainly shoot .22lr, 9mm,45 acp, 357 & 38, 12G, 7.62x39, .308, .223/556, 7.62x54r, 300 win mag, 8x57

Lots of people have .22 lr, ARs without bullet buttons and don't get busted for them.

Franklin Armory is selling their new 17 WSM rimfire AR without a bullet button out of the box in CA. If it might be a issue, they wouldn't do that.

I just built a dedicated ar-22. I have a cmmg .22 dedicated upper, a "better mag" adapter in the lower's magwell and no bb. A 5.56 upper will not function and a 5.56 magazine cannot be inserted with the mag adapter installed.

I would love for someone to give me grief about my setup... It is within the letter of the law and I refuse to put a bb on a gun that has no legal need for it.

You are more likely to get that from a miss-informed LEO than anyone here.

Only arguable if you didn't have the lower attached to the upper.
