Bolt action 22lr for kids?

CZ 452 Scout, Savage Mark II, and Ruger American Rimfire are all good choices. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Keystone Crickets and Savage Rascalls are good single-shot first time guns for small framed shooters.

Definitely stick with a bolt gun, though, before you go to a semi-auto. Find one that fits their frame (check for length of pull) and where the action (including the safety) is easy to operate.

My personal experience with the Savage Mark II is that I didn't like the magazine. Other than that, it shoots great.

I like how the RAR mag sits flush in the stock and can be used on a 10/22 if you decide to get one in the future. The swapable stock inserts were also a big plus for me.

I started my daughters with a Romanian M1969. It is a magazine fed bolt-action, but is easy to single load. I picked mine up when Big 5 was selling them for a ridiculously low price.

Cub Scouts only shoot BB gun and archery. Did you mean Tenderfoot?

Over the years of Cub Scout leader, Boy Scout leader, and continuing after to help a friend kid after my son was done, I have seen some kids that were really small.

Most times those guys did ok on the 22/rifle range, but even youth shotguns were too big for them.

Well, to me they are Cubs because they are transitioning into Boy Scouts, but they often still show up at Winter Camp wearing their Webelo uniforms as they may not have acquired their Boy Scout uniforms yet. But yes, you are right, they would have already bridged to technically be considered Boy Scouts to shoot shotguns or .22s. But they are so small, it's hard for me to think of them as Boy Scouts when I have Eagles who are 17 1/2, stand 6' 4" and weigh 210lbs ;-)

Never shot a CZ Scout but I have had a 452 and 455 ...best rifles currently made or in the case of the 452 recently made

Too true! We have an older kid just made Eagle, could be a college football linebacker.

Where do you guys shoot besides camp? Our troop shoots at Sac Valley(We're east of Sacramento) mostly. They are very supportive of GSA, BSA, 4H. They do Appleseed too, which is great for non-Scout trips.

But they are so small, it's hard for me to think of them as Boy Scouts when I have Eagles who are 17 1/2, stand 6' 4" and weigh 210lbs ;-)

I vote for a single shot bolt action as a beginner rifle, and get one that has a stock that is small enough for a child to hold and fire. Consider the length of pull and the ability to hold the pistol grip and still be able to pull the trigger with the index finger. I got my daughter a Cricket, and she likes it so much she is not interested in transitioning to a Ruger 10-22.

Got my 8 year old son a Savage II FVSS stainless steel, iron sights (good ones with glow stick thingies in them) magazine fed. It is sweet. He doesn't like it because there's no scope, but I want him to start with iron sights.

I have to say, while I love Savage, the magazine is hard to get in and out. As for it being a shooter, it is really accurate.
