Get a ruger American 22 lr for a bolt action. I've seen them go for 250. Plus it uses 1022 magazines

The savage mk II series is pretty popular.

CZ ?452? is very nice but I think out of your price range.

10/22 Ruger and then you can trick it out as they get older. (We're in the wrong forum).

Not the wrong forum exactly since he said 'bolt action'.....

The problem with kids and semi auto.... you burn through a LOT of ammo...... quickly......

A bolt action slows them down.

A single shot bolt action really slows them down...

A few years ago I went with a group of friends for a shoot- about 10 people including 1 child... who wanted me to keep loading 10/22 mags for him to shoot instead of loading them himself.... dumping them as fast as he could pull the trigger.....

Made me wish I brought my dads old single shot savage..... "here you go- have fun....."

Don't hate my suggestion. Get a Henry H001. under 300.00 and you'll love it.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Have taught kids to shoot. Have bolt 22 and 10-22.

Always start them on the bolt gun, one round at a time. Teach them the basics with iron sights.

Then, will allow them to shoot either. But, I am a big fan of them learning marksmanship first.

Savage Rascal's are nice for smaller kids, not sure how big your 8yr old is. Accutrigger, a feed ramp, and a real bolt action. But single shot only. However you can also turn it into a nice lightweight pack rifle later when he grows out of it, by adding something to extend the length of pull. I'm probably going to get my 8yr old daugther one this year.

If he is a bigger guy for his age, then a Ruger American Compact or Savage Mark II GY are both nice and feed from magazines.

Ive trained two of my sons so far with the H01, and for the cost, it can't be beat!

                        Amazingly well made gun.

I agree, I love my H001L. It is a very smooth shooter, a tack driver, and has classic looks. It would be an awesome heirloom first gun.

OP if you are open to a lever gun (which is still a form of manual bolt action gun) then the Henry cannot be beat, although they run a little more than the bolt guns mentioned here.

Didn't even notice this was the won't section. I just saw manually operated. Can someone please move it?

Big fan of the Savage MKII series. Its one of those that over the years you can add to and trick out a little more to become a great trainer. I have a FV-SR that I love, but as mentioned above, getting one with irons to start is ideal.
