How do these compare to the marlins?
6 of one, a half dozen of another?

I hear nothing but good things about the Savages.

I'm very happy with my XT-22, though the stock marlin iron sights are kinda' hard for my old eyes to pick up.

I put a Nikon Prostaff rimfire scope on mine, but if you want irons some Tech Sights would make the Marlin an excellent shooter.

      Mind you, I'm 5'7", 180, with a visible Ab...

I have a marlin xt22 and I sure love it. You will not regret it. Adjustable trigger is nice and crisp.

I've yet to own a Marlin bolt gun. All I can tell you is the Savage Mark II rifles shoot astonishingly well for what you are paying. I ended up getting mine for $180 out the door. Tossed on a decent scope, and now its shooting tight groups, with any ammo that I feed it.

If you don't mind waiting until you have the money to spend or until your conscience will let you spend it, take a long look at the CZ's. You can go with the 452 series or you can go with the 455's with the option for changing the barrels. You have the option of .22, .17, or .22 mag. Fit and finish are excellent. Accuracy is as good and usually better than Savage, Marlin, and Ruger. Of course you can do better if you step up to an Annie.

Put down another vote for the Ruger American Rimfire. Mine's the Compact model, but I love the handiness on it. Shoots great too. I'm a terrible shot, and managed to this with my first five shots out of the gun @ 20 yards.

Ignore the shot to the right, that was my first shot of the next group.

That being said, while I would ultimately love to own a CZ bolt gun (the 455 and 452 are wonderful rifles), I just could not pass on the price and logistics that the RAR offered, since it takes 10/22 magazines and features an easy-to-adjust trigger.

I have the Savage with Bull Barrel, nylon stock, scope that came with it, and it will shoot the teats off a fly at 50 yards on any ammo.
Hard to beat and the 10 round mags I bought cut down on ammo consumption, increase the fun factor. (I have a couple semi-auto .22's as well)
I really like making an empty shotgun shell dance all over the place.

OP: I think you answered your own question if you want to keep the price down to ~$200. BassPros list the XT at $209. I am sure on sale, could get it for less.
Xt, for the bucks, is a fine bolt action rifle.
If looking for used post a WTB in the for sale/buy section. You might get some bites.

Worth nothing that in the picture above, I shot that group with iron sights, right outta the box. Didn't adjust the sights in any way.

Basically OP, there are a wealth of options that you have at your disposal, but do keep in mind (as mentioned before) i would be a good idea to at least start the DROS process before the 1st of the new year, so you're not required to have that new Firearms Card or whatever.

Another testimonial to Ruger American Rimfire. I love mine. Bought on sale when they first came out, and put an old Simmons scope I had laying about. Plinking away at empty shotgun hulls, and bits of wood debris from 50 meters and being able to drill holes exactly where the cross hairs were was about as much fun as I've ever had with any gun. I do like the interchangeable buttstocks - I think that is an ingenious feature, and wish they'd adopt that to their centerfire American Rifles.

Who are we foolin'? We're all going to buy more long guns sooner or later. Eventually, we have to pay the extortion fee.
