it's a decent round, google it's ballistics. it was just kind of killed off by 17 hmr because of it's price and these days availability.
.17 wsm is headed in the same direction.

A neat round -- basically a .22 LR wildcat.
Should typically remain sonic to 160 to 175 meters. Ballistics are good within that range -- comeup is about 1 MOA per 25 meters, wind correction 1 MOA per 25 meters per 10 MPH at full value.
Unfortunately, ammo is difficult to find.
One of the ideas behind .17 Mach 2 was that by using similar cartridge dimensions to .22 LR, it would be easy for rifle manufacturers to modify .22 rifles, or even allow the user to switch caliber via a barrel change. Only problem is that .17 Mach 2 works poorly in blowback semi-autos because of the much higher chamber pressure... so that turned out to be a bad idea.
At this point the .17 HMR has a prohibitive advantage in the marketplace. This is another good round, but it's louder and more expensive in exchange for about another 50 meters range with similar ballistic performance. That's the way it goes... lots of good loadings out there that just don't catch on.Riflemen Needed.

Great round for killing squirrels, shoots laser flat to about 80 yards. According to Hornady they are not discontinuing the round but do not know when they will be back in stock, they said their supplier is just running .22 now. I email about every three or four months, get basically the same reply everytime.Comment

I lucked out a guy that owed me a favor had a bunch and sold me some at 7$/50. What about guns specifically. Anyone shooting a Savage. I'm excited to go see how she does just need to get the time off. 100 yards is probably the farthest id shoot it. Squirrels and paper will see the wrath of this set-up. Also besides gunbroker anyone have luck finding ammo elsewhere? What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us

Supposidly Hornady has vowed to continue to support it by making a limited run of it once a year. At one point Mid South was taking backorders at $6 and change a box. Hornady made their limited run this year and Mid South filled all their BO's and honored their price. I don't think that they had enough left over to list it on their website after the BO's were filled but others suppliers got some during the same time frame and it didn't last long even priced above the HMR price.
The Savage HMRs are great shooting guns and I don't see why the Savage HM2 wouldn't be as well. I've shot 1000's of ground squirrels with an Anschutz HM2 and think it is a great round if it is priced at half of what HMR is selling for. The HMR is a far more devsating round than the HM2 and is a lot less affected by wind. I'd love to keep shooting squirrels with it on calm days, but when the current stockpile runs out I doubt I will replenish it at the current price and I don't see the price going down at all in the future, so the HMR will be shot instead.Originally Posted by OCEquestrian View Post

Yeah I'm definitely going to be picking up ammo whenever I see it. What sucks it seems everyone is being pushed towards the HMR at this point is based on ammo availability. A great round but 1/2 more the price. What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us

The 17 HM2 is a great little round. Hopefully once the rimfire panic simmers down, it will make a come back in availability.
There is without a doubt a demand from thousands of shooters with 17 HM2 rifles for the ammo so its unlikely its going to go out of production.Comment

You can run .17PMC ammo in a .17HM2 bolt-gun as well.
UNAC has some .17 PMC in stock, $135 shipped for 1,000 rounds: https://www.unammo.com/
He's a good guy to deal with and ships fast...You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
Come on...what harm??

Has anyone shot the .17 pmc? My understanding is the cartridge is shorter? I'm curious how it seats when loaded am if you sacrifice accuracy by using this round vs. Standard mach2What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us

.17 PMC is .17 Aguila. Made in Mexico.
Midway usually has a few bricks available. My Mach2 runs the Aguila very well, but not as good as the HM2.
The HM2 is, essentially, the Stinger case necked to .17. While the .17 Aguila is a standard case necked down. I get an occasional split case, but it does not seem to effect accuracy or function, nor do I get a faceful of gasses.
The only trouble I have, is the magazine for the HM2 will not feed the shorter case of the Aguila, forcing me to single load. But, since most of my rifles are shot single anyway, this is not much of an actual problem with me.
The bullet is, essentially, a miniature Matchking. Hunting results echo the results of big game shot with actual Matchkings. I.e; Accurate hits with minimal bullet disruption."A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......CiceroComment
