Looking for .22 handgun, SSE a consideration?

Sorry for the cryptic subject heading. I am new to California.
I would like to get something like a Buck Mark, MKx, Single six or suchlike without braking the bank. I don't need the fancy competition models or the expensive S&W models. I would like something with a nice level of accuracy. I am an ex IPSC competitor so just looking to have some relaxed target shooting for a change.

I don't really fully understand the SSE law but given what I am looking for do I need to hurry and get something before the end of this year or does it not really matter or would this only apply to the MKx models which are off roster?

    Thanks.

Most 22's will be harder to SSE compared to centerfire handguns. Though some have been done.

That being said your best bet would be to keep your eye on the marketplace for used guns. While many people are ASKING stupid prices you can get good deals. I just picked up a Ruger MKiii 22/45 Target model with a 5" bull barrel from another member for $250.

    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Single shot exemption is only for off-roster handguns (like the Ruger Mark series).

Browning Buck Marks are still on the roster, and single action revolvers (like the Ruger Single Six) are exempt from even needing to be on the roster.

Based on the criteria you mentioned, you don't need to worry about SSE coming to an end unless you had your heart set on a Ruger Mark or other off-roster handgun. On January 1, 2015, you'll still be able to get Buck Marks and Single Sixes.

Correct it only applies to the MKx models which are off roster. So make sure to pick up whatever pistols you intend on getting that are not on the roster before EOY. Make sure your other choices are ON the roster so that you can pick them up later next year if you feel like it.

Quite a bit available that's for sure.
Please help us help you by giving us your preference.
          Single action/double action semi auto?
          Single action/double action revolver?
          Budget?

Welcome to the state and CG's.
Do you still have family out of state? Intrafamily transfers are not affected by AB169's gun ban (I call it what it is, okay).

If not, than let's move on to what you should do for the next few months.

Here is our roster list: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/
If you look at that "Recently Removed Handguns", you will see a pattern of who is not renewing their semi-auto (mainly Ruger and S&W...darn, I just saw the High Power in .40sw left us on the 15th).
Well, there is not much left anyways for Ruger and S&W in .22lr in a semi-auto handgun.

I think you are safe to wait on a Buck Mark, they renewed this year, and lot's of them have an expire dates out there in 2015.

If you want a Ruger MK3 or 22/45, well it's time to SSE one of those in. Consider the 22/45 Lite version.
Why the Lite? Because the 22/45 is the oddball handgun with the serial number on the upper. You can not just buy a TacSolution upper like the Buck Mark. They were never on roster, and you will rarely if ever find that in the used market.

As far as other fairly priced 22's, the Ruger SR22 & M&P 22 were once hot items. S&W model 41, but yea expensive in my opinion.

            Have fun shopping.

Thanks all for your prompt and very useful replies.

No family out of state, in fact I am new to the country!
I have owned all the variations of handguns in much larger calibers.
I don't really mind what I end up getting providing it's reasonably priced and has some inherent accuracy. I doubt if I will compete in any competitions but want to challenge myself.

A Ruger MKiii 22/45 Target model with a 5" bull barrel for $250 sounds great!!

I'm picking up my new Henry H001 this week and will chat to the folks at the LGS as well. Maybe do my HSC at the same time.

I struck it lucky at Walmart last week so at least have some reasonably priced ammo to play with.

Ahh, I'll give you some clues. There's already one in my username.

Can the GSG 922 be SSE'd?
I know the CA version is on the books already. But I'm interested in the regular version. In case I move to Arizona.
