As iron Cannon said, they did change their finishes. Heres a pic of an older one and a newer one side by side. The older (short bbl) has a loaded chamber indicator on the back of the slide...they discontinued that feature in the 60s. FWIW, I think the machined finishes are finer on the newer one (circa 1990). They both shoot magnificently.

Smith 41 can be had within you budget if you look hard enough. It's the standard in your price range.

Model 41 great pistol and hard to beat, if your open to revolver a model 17 s&w or 617 prelock are the most accurate I've shot and you can fire the sub sonics no problem for pest control.

Colt Woodsman Match Target is the benchmark IMO and a definite heirloom piece. Get one 50 years or older and it will qualify as C&R, no roster necessary. All 1st Series models and lots of 2nd Series qualify.

I got my Series 2 off GunBroker and couldn't be happier. If you go for a 2nd series, just get the S/N so you can date it prior to purchasing.

I'll add a Model 41 some day!

I own both the Colt Woodsman (Second Series, which is the most desirable version) and the Smith and Wesson Model 41.

The Colt Woodsman, is an heirloom (as stated by dpop). The parts are not very available. The magazines go for almost $100.00 on ebay and are hard to find.

The Model 41, is still a popular handgun to use in bullseye competitions. Parts are easily available. Magazines are around $20.00. There are lots of choices of grips available. Barrels are easily found, and there are several makers of custom barrels. Changing barrels is easy and does not require any tools.
