Well SW made the lower receiver mag well just a little bit different than a standard AR15 mag well, so regular AR mags could not be put in it.

I suppose maybe they had concerns of someone using AR15 style mags in it.. Not for sure why they did it. Was really no sane reason too.

I have used the SW mags in our CMMGs without the adapter and they seemed to work OK, but will have a little slop without the adapter. You can epoxy a little piece on the mag to get a tighter fit.

But the adapter not only makes them fit really nice. But also adds the last shot hold open function and full function of the bolt release lever, when using the SW mags. Which is the real great feature of it.

I really like the better mag adapter but I do have a complaint about it. It can be a pain to figure out how to install the first time. Then the problem comes later if you swap on a .223 upper it has to be removed. (not really a problem if you dedicate the lower to the .22 upper full time) It is essentially a two piece adapter. Large piece. Small piece. There is a chance of losing the little piece out in the field if you are not careful when changing it. It could fall in some grass or something and be somewhat hard to find. I wish they would redesign it into a one piece somehow. Then it would be perfect and alot easier to install and remove.

Still a great little piece of equipment as is though.

The SW mags were of course not made to fit a regular AR lower. The SW lower is just different than standard.

The SW mags are really nice and the better mag adapter is worth the 30.00 for sure.

The Blackdog mags are also great mags. But the problem with those is you cannot use them with the Better Mag Adapter. The Black Dogs will hold the bolt open on the last round. But that is done with a taller follower in the mag. But once you remove the mag the bolt will automatically go forward.

The Better Mag adapter will give you full function with the bolt release lever in the lower when using the SW mags, just like a real AR15 does. Very nice to have if you can swing the extra expense.

I would avoid the CMMG mags completely. Just go the SW route with adapter and you will be very happy with them.

I have heard some good things about the Tactical Solutions stuff. I like CMMG as they were the first to really give us full support on the .22 rimfire in the AR Platform. They also have some of the best Customer Service in the Industry if you do have problems. That means alot to me. Not saying others may not. But I know CMMG does.

Sorry for the extended posts, but trying to help you as much as I can with what I do know..

Do it, my CMMG upper works great with any .22 lr ammo I've tired. Keep it clean and well lubed and it'll run like a top.

Now is a good time to buy AR components before the hype/panic/scare BS starts in again before next election.

You don't need a BB for a rimfire AR, and get Black Dog machine mags with steel feed lips.

Please PM me if you have any other questions about 22 ARs.

Like I said the Black Dogs are quality mags. But it is sure nice to be able to pull the mag and have the bolt stay open like it is supposed to. Then insert another mag and release the catch and you are ready to go again. Not essential, but nice.

A Green Mountain 20" A1 1.5 lb pencil barrel makes for an excellent .22LR shooter. It's 1/12 twist but will shoot 55 grain .223's very well. That twist rate is also great for .22LR. Just add a .22LR conversion bolt and a black dog mag and shoot away. When you can't find .22LR, load up some 5.56 and have at it.

I have the TacSol upper, and it is fantastic. Very accurate and reliable. And while most tactical .22lrs feel like toys, having the TS upper on an AR lower makes it feel every bit like my other "real" ARs. Glad I went that route.

That said, the MP15-22s I've shot have all been tons of fun to shoot as well. Just like my Sig 522. Highly recommend both!

Honestly the mag adapter thing is starting to sound like a pain. What does it look like installed on the lower? Any pics?

Heres a pic, hope I did not make it sound so much like a pain, it is not once you are on to it.. I think it is one of the best AR22 accessories to come along in years.

It still only takes a couple minutes to remove and install it once you know how the procedures goes. Mostly they do not come with adequate instructions. i just wish it was a one piece instead of the little actuator being seperate. Heres a pic of mine in the lower..

It did take me a few minutes to get it in because it has been a while since we have used it. But now I can do it in less than a minute after reprogramming

Heres a link to a youtube showing the procedure.

Just picked up a M&P 15-22 from a Calgunner. Will have some range time with it this weekend.

I got the DPMS upper from Midway. It's been in my bookmark for ages and when I saw it go on sale for 350 I grabbed one along with two Blackdog mags. Only got to break it in indoor so I haven't tested it at 100yd yet, but for what I've shot through it is very accurate and reliable. The very first round misfed, bent the nose and dented the casing but that could've been from how the mag was loaded. Every shot after worked perfectly. The included sheet suggests ~1/8 MOA after full break-in.

It's a bit heavy although they sell a standard plastic handguard and thin barrel version if you want a tacticool-able one. The weight plus a bipod makes it very steady for target shooting but you might need an adapter since the handguard has no rails or holes to install them, only a sling swivel attachment. There is also no easy provisions for a front sight.

No funky adapters needed. Goes right onto an existing lower and you can leave the stock buffer/spring in if you wish; it butts up against the lower so even an empty buffer tube will work.

Personally I run a Tacsol M4 complete upper assembly.
They are made off spec receivers with their own design for the barrel and BCG. there is no gas system and no buffer tube. It uses black dog mags and i have mine setup on a 80% lower with standard a r15 LPK with no BB.

I have maybe 5000 rounds through the upper and have zero complaints.

No .22 AR needs a buffer or a gas system. They are all blowback.

Only advantage to keeping a buffer in is you can use a Taccom pressure plug in front of the buffer to keep a little pressure against the rear of the bolt assembly. Not necessary in our CMMGs, but can be useful in some applications'

Does the DPMS have full functioning Last Shot Hold Open and release? If so I would like to see how they did it.

Any true dedicated .22 upper will fit a standard AR15 lower..

Sig 522, literary shoots any kind of 22 ammo no matter how crappy the rounds are.

The last shot open function works against the magazine follower. Once you drop the mag the bolt will shut. You can manually press the standard release to hold the bolt open but in this position it is not far back enough to chamber a round; haven't looked closely enough to see why they chose to do it this way. This and the proprietary charging handle are really the only negatives for me as I'd like an ambidextrous handle.
