    ar platform 22s?

In the market for a new 22 rifle. Sold my mossberg plinkster to a buddy a while back and miss shooting 22. had my heart set on a nice new ruger 10/22 but i am starting to consider buying a complete upper half set up for .22.

i already have a stripped lower receiver right now with no real plans for it, its just kinda sitting in the safe so i am kicking around the idea of a dedicated .22 upper. got a few questions before i decide. . .

do they still utilize a gas system? or is it like a blowback system? do you need to run a specific kind of buffer for them? i know there are specific magazines for .22s but what about mag release? and is bullet button required? if i have a bullet button installed will it still work with the 15-22 mags? basically i want to know if you can just plop a dedicated ar upper onto a lower and have it 'just work'

any good brands? anything to avoid? budget is around $400

I really like the Smith and Wesson 15-22. It is not a true AR platform but all the controls are functional and the rifle just works. For not much more than $400 you can get a complete rifle. I sold mine in a fit of weakness and I regret it.

Love the CMMG dedicated uppers. You do not "need" a buffer at all, but they can useful sometimnes to put a little pressure against the bolt group.

Do not know anything about bullet buttons but we use SW MP 15 22 mags in our CMMG and they work great. We run the better mag adapter in ours. Works great.

All you really need is the lower. And you have that. So do it. ALOT of fun. You will find yourself tricking it out though. Anything that will fit a AR15 will fit the dedicated upper.

MP 15 22s are nice little rifles, but I hate all the plastic and they are still a proprietary design. The dedicated upper is a "real" AR15 that just happens to shoot .22 rimfire.

Here is one of our dedicated CMMG uppers, but this one has a Taccom ULW barrel. Really like the barrel. It weighs right at 1 pound

Like the CMMG standard barrel, but give the small edge in accuracy to the Taccom. Taccom is surely alot lighter..

The whole rifle with the Rifle length hand guard, Magpul stock, Taccom barrel, buffer installed, (we keep the buffer in as this lower gets a .223 upper swapped on occasionally also) It is right over five pounds as shown. Minus the 50 round drum mag

This thing runs 100% flawless with any ammo I put in it.

love it. are they picky about ammo? what kind of accuracy can you get out of it? ill be shooting mostly paper at 100yds, and some squirrels and pigeons at my uncles property.

I have personally never found any ammo that did not work perfectly. But 95 % of what we shoot is Federal Bulk and my favorite .22 ammo (CCI Standard Velocity)

Even the dreaded REM Goldens work perfectly.

The Taccom barrel will shoot under 1 inch at 50 yards for sure if you do your part. Maybe even 3/4. I never shoot 100 yards. But it will surely hit a rodent at that range pretty easily.

We do not shoot paper alot. But when we have, I was impressed.

Understand this was a CMMG stock upper from the start. You may be better off buying a dedicated Stainless CMMG bolt. Barrel, handguard, AR15 upper receiver, and build one like you like it from the get go. You can just use a cheap standard aluminum AR15 Charging handle. Probably cheaper to do it this way in the long run. As most change alot of things out anyway.

Maybe even consider a ULW barrel and bolt from Taccom to start with. I myself prefer the CMMG stainless Bolt groups, but the nickel plated ones from Taccom seem to be well liked by people that own them.. I just like the CMMG stainless ones and they have never let us down, So no need to change.

Really easy to make a dedicated upper yourself too..

The M&P15-22 is as far as you need to look. Save that lower for a future build. I have one and it is bar none one of the funnest weapons I own. The controls and mechanics are the same as with its big brother. It is also very easy to field strip and clean.

Cannot get simpler than the real AR15 platform for stripping and cleaning
Exact stripping procedure of the real thing.

As far as fun. They should be equal there. As even the SW is somewhat built on the AR Platform.

That is what these dedicated uppers are. A real AR15 upper with a .22 bolt and barrel on it. You can swap the bolt and barrel out and it can be a .223 upper..

You do not not have to "save" the lower for future build. He can still build the AR15 upper later on and in two minutes swap back and forth between both calibers. Try that with you SW lower

We can switch over to .223 to .22 rimfire on the same lower, in a matter of less than a minute.

That is one of the great things about going with a real dedicated upper.

And did I mention, no plastic receivers.

The SWs are a good little Firearm. But sorry. They cannot compare to a Quality Dedicated .22 upper.

Only one thing my CMMGs do not have as the big brother. No functioning Forward assist. Ours still has it in the receiver, but it is not functional.. But FA is even useless in a .223 AR15 also..

Here's the AR I built for the wife. PSA lower, Aero upper with Taacom bolt and barrel. It's got the better mag adapter so she can use the MP 15-22 mags. Other than the adapter, no special parts on the lower at all. Hell you don't even need a buffer

Check out that site for everything you need. But if you build the upper from scratch, you may not make your budget.

Go over to the equipment exchange on the AR15 forum if you build from scratch. You can find alot of quaity used stuff on there for the build. I bought the JP Enterprise Free Float hand guard there for way less than half the new price. It was essentially new. They are expensive.

They also have a great AR22 rimfire section there. Best on the net..

It is a quality Hand Guard. Bought alot of other hardly used parts there over the years. If you are patient you can assemble a very nice upper..At a good price.

Joe Bobs usually has the Taccom barrels at the best price around. And alot of other nice reasonably priced goodies.

cabmd. That is not a bad price for that. Looks to have the stainless Bolt too.

Look at the CMMG upper from Exile Machine. They are advertisers here.

Today, we are ecstatic to announce that Lunde Studio acquired Exile Machine. Exile Machine is another forerunner in the gun industry, boasting 10 years of substantial professional experience.

Also get the Better mag adapter and S&W mags that AR22 mentioned and you are GTG.
