It wouldn't bother me to use shorts in a sporter rifle. In a longer barrel they're very quiet. But I would never, ever use them in my target or benchrest rifles. The case, being shorter than a LR, stops well within the chamber. When you fire enough of them through a match .22LR chambering, they leave a ring at that point that starts to pit into the very smooth chamber of those guns. And the bullet has to travel down the remainder of that chamber before it bites into the leade and rifling - rather than biting into the leade before firing. So, if it cants slightly at ignition, it stays canted all the way down the barrel.

My only suggestion to you is, if you're going to shoot .22 short in a LR chamber, clean out that ignition ring after you're done each time.

      What Ace said.
That goes for 454 Casull guns as well when 45Colt has been fired,as a example.
I shoot CB longs often even a 10-22.Sometimes you just have to use a quiet round for something.

Fire single shot and nothing bad will happen.

Also goes for 38 spl in a 357 mag, 44 spl in 44 mag, etc. Clean it well after shooting the shorter rounds and its okay.

After you have gone through the shorts you have and go back to LR, test for cold shot fliers from the rifle. It's possible for the shorts to leave more lead than a a LR in the Leade, the transition area from the freebore of the chamber to full rifling. On the first/cold shot this lead deposit will be hard and can affect accuracy (in one of my rifles the cold shot was 3 inches off at 50 yards). Accuracy gradually comes back to near normally as the bore heats up with subsequent shots. Cleaning this area of the chamber is time consuming but worthwhile, if you see this happening with your rifle.

                ^^^ This

I had a few boxes of 22 short in the safe that my dad bought from Montgomery Wards. My sons Henry has no problem running them. Loads of fun to shoot..

I remember the shooting Gallery at Streamland park in Pico Rivera. They went thought cases of 22 short every weekend..
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Editing my previous post, as for some reason I thought you were asking about a semi rifle. In any case, I've shot 22 short through a designated 22LR (Marlin 795) countless times. You should be fine.

My old Remington bolt action loves .22 shorts (which is about the only thing I can find locally recently)

I use them on a regular basis to thin out our bunny herd
