Ruger single six, I've got an old flatgate that was handed down to me.Comment

I've been on this same thought recently. Like the classic look of the Ruger Mk 3. Might be the one..God may have made men, but Samuel Colt made them equal.
Send me pics of your: Colt Detective Special, AMT Hardballer, pre-64 Winchester Model 70. I'm looking for them.Comment

This is easy. Ruger Single Six for SA gun. S&W 617 for DA revolver.
617 will be $1000. Single Six will be $300 to $700.
Or get an H & R 900 series which hasn't been made for 20 years for less than $200 if you can find one. My Dad has the one I put many hundreds of rounds through when I was a kid (1960's). It has a 9 round cylinder, shoots as well today as it did then.
Semi-autos - you are on your own. I've found my Beretta Ceiner conversion slide is as reliable as the ammo I am shooting.

You mention Heirloom, this implies a Quality Higher End Firearm rather then some of the Entry level ones mentioned...
To me, only two qualify for that level that are still in Production, The S&W 617 and Model 41.
No one will argue with their Quality, ability to hold value, or precision...
All others mentioned are like Chevys to a Rolls Royce. And some of the Higher end ones mentioned (High Standard, etc) are not readily available or are out of Production...TURNING and turning in the widening gyre

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Just to add, I think a True "keepsake" gun should be a top of the line type gun..like a Mod 41,17, Medalist or a minty old Hi-Standard...But you mentioned you want to teach newbies & kids...Hence my suggestion..If a Kid dropped my Meadalist on a rock..I'd be sick.Comment

Sounds like you need two guns. One to teach and one to pass down.
Keep in mind, learning to shoot from your Dad will develop some pretty strong memories. There are plenty of folk looking for the 22 they were taught to shoot on. It has zero to do with quality, just great memories."The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

The value of a keepsake is in the memories, not in the age or perceived value placed on it by others. I suggest getting a gun that you like since the reason you buy it becomes part of the story you hand down along with it. Your kids will remember every scratch and ding that is put on it and tell their kids about it when it's time for them to pass it down the line.
I really like Killer Bee's personal touch, too. I have a High Standard Supermatic Citation 103 that I'll pass on but can only shoot standard velocity rounds which are getting harder to find. Older guns are cool, but the memories associated with it belong to someone else. Remember that today's heirlooms were once new guns, too.Comment

A good classic will hold value. If you can find one. Avoid cheapo
